It is narrated from Sayyiduna Khuraym bin Fatik al-Asadi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "People are of four kinds, and deeds are of six kinds: two that make (something) obligatory, one that is like for like, one that is tenfold, and one that is seven hundredfold. The two that make obligatory are these: whoever dies a Muslim, Paradise becomes obligatory for him; and whoever dies a disbeliever, Hell becomes obligatory for him. Like for like is that a servant intends a good deed and one good deed is written for him, and he intends an evil deed and is recompensed only with its like. A servant does a good deed and it is written for him tenfold, and a servant spends in the way of Allah and it is multiplied for him seven hundredfold. And people are of four kinds: one who is given ample means in this world and ample means in the Hereafter; second, one who is kept in straitness in this world and given ample means in the Hereafter; third, one who is given ample means in this world and kept in straitness in the Hereafter; and fourth, one who is wretched in both this world and the Hereafter."

And deeds: two that make (something) obligatory, one that is like for like, one that is tenfold, and one that is seven hundredfold. The two that make obligatory are these: whoever dies in a state of not associating anything with Allah will enter Paradise, and whoever dies associating partners with Allah will enter Hell. Whoever intends an evil deed but does not do it, one good deed is written for him; and whoever does it, one evil deed is written against him. Whoever intends a good deed but does not do it, one good deed is also written for him; and if he does it, it is written for him tenfold. And spending in the way of Allah is (multiplied) seven hundredfold."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Khuraym bin Fatik (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Commander of the Believers! Shall I not tell you how my Islam began?" He said: "Yes, certainly, tell me." Khuraym (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was roaming in search of my camels, following their tracks, when night overtook me at al-Abraq al-Azzaf. So I called out at the top of my voice: 'I seek refuge with the chief (of the jinn) of this valley from the fools of his people.' Suddenly a caller (from the unseen) called out, saying: 'Woe to you! Seek refuge with Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, the Lord of glory, blessings and bounty; recite some verses from Surah al-Anfal; affirm the Oneness of Allah and fear no one.' Khuraym (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was seized by intense fear. Then, when I regained my composure, I said: 'O caller! What do you say? Is it guidance you have or misguidance? Tell us, may Allah guide you, what is the way?' He said: 'This is the Messenger of Allah, the possessor of good things, in Yathrib, calling to salvation; he commands fasting and prayer and restrains people from evils.' Khuraym (may Allah be pleased with him) said: So I followed my mount and said: 'Guide me rightly, may Allah guide you; may you never be hungry or unclothed. May you always be happy as long as you live, and do not prefer anything over the good that you have been given.' Khuraym (may Allah be pleased with him) said: He kept following me, saying: 'May Allah be your companion and keep you safe, bring you to your family and complete your journey. Believe in him, may my Lord fulfil your right; and support him, may my Lord grant honour to your support.' Khuraym (may Allah be pleased with him) said: So I entered Madinah, and it was a Friday. I looked into the mosque, and Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) came out to me and said: 'Come in, may Allah have mercy on you; news of your Islam has reached us.' I said: 'I do not know how to purify myself properly,' so he taught me. Then I entered the mosque and saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the pulpit delivering the sermon, as if he were the full moon, and he was saying: "Any Muslim who performs ablution (wudu) well, then offers a prayer which he keeps in mind and understands, will enter Paradise." At this Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: 'Bring a witness for this, or else I will punish you.' So the elder of Quraysh, Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), testified in my favour, and he (Umar) accepted his testimony.

Al-Hasan bin Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father; he said: One day Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): "Tell me a hadith that will delight me." He said: Khuraym bin Fatik al-Asadi (may Allah be pleased with him) told me; he said: I went out in search of camels and found them at al-Abraq al-Azzaf. I hobbled them and lay down resting my head on the foreleg of one of the camels; this was close to the time of the appearance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then I said: 'I seek refuge with the great one (of the jinn) of this valley.' He said: People used to do this in the time of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah). Then a caller began calling out to me, saying: 'Woe to you! Seek refuge with Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, who sent down the unlawful and the lawful; affirm the Oneness of Allah and do not fear; do not fear anything of the terrors of the world of the jinn, when you remember Allah on the mile-markers and in the plains of the earth and the mountains; the scheming of the jinn has been brought low, except for piety and righteous deeds.' He said: Then I said: 'O caller! What is your view? Is it guidance you have or misguidance?' He said: 'This is the Messenger of Allah, the possessor of good things; he has come with Surah Ya Sin, the Ha Mim surahs and, after them, the Mufassal surahs, which set out the unlawful and the lawful. He commands fasting and prayer and restrains people from the evils that have always been considered abhorrent.' He said: I said: 'Who are you, may Allah have mercy on you?' He said: 'I am Malak bin Malik; the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has sent me to the jinn of Najd (to call them to Islam).' He said: I said: 'If I had someone to take care of these camels of mine, I would go to him and believe in him.' He said: 'I will take care of them until I deliver them safely to your family, if Allah wills.' So I tied up one camel from among them, then came to Madinah and found the people on a Friday while they were in prayer. I said: 'Let them complete their prayer, then I will go in.' I was busy making my mount kneel when Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) came to me and said: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) says: Come in.' So I went in, and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me, he said: "What became of the old man who took responsibility for delivering your camels safely to your family? Listen, he has delivered them safely to your family." The narrator says: I said: 'May Allah have mercy on him.' At this the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, may Allah have mercy on him." (On hearing this) he said: 'I bear witness that there is no true god except Allah,' and his Islam became excellent.
