Ubaydullah bin Abi Rafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: Among the names of those who took part (in the battles) alongside Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) is Khawwat bin Jubayr (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a participant in Badr and belonged to Banu Harithah. He had turned back from the way, yet the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) still allotted him a share (of the spoils).

Sayyiduna Khawwat bin Jubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We encamped with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at Marr al-Zahran. He says: I came out of my tent and there were some women talking, and they attracted me. So I went back, took out my bag, took a garment out of it and put it on, and came and sat with them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out of his tent and said: "O Abu Abdullah! What has made you sit with them?" When I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I was overawed and became confused. I said: "O Messenger of Allah! A camel of mine has run away, and I am looking for a rope for it." So he went on and I followed him. He gave me his cloak and went into the arak bushes; it is as if I can still see the whiteness of his back amid the greenness of the arak. He relieved himself and performed ablution (wudu), then came back with water flowing from his beard onto his chest (or he said: dripping), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Abdullah! What became of your camel's running away?" Then we set off, and whenever he met me during the journey he would say: "Peace be upon you, O Abu Abdullah! What became of that runaway camel?" When I saw this, I hurried off to Madinah and began to keep away from the mosque and from the gatherings of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When this had gone on for a long time, I looked for a time when the mosque would be empty, came to the mosque and stood up to pray. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) suddenly came out of one of his rooms and prayed two light rak'ahs, while I prolonged (my prayer) in the hope that he would leave and let me be. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Abdullah! Prolong it as much as you wish; I will not get up (from here) until you finish." I said to myself: "By Allah! I will certainly apologise to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and clear his heart." When he (peace and blessings be upon him) said (again): "Peace be upon you, O Abu Abdullah! What became of that runaway camel?" I said: "By the One who sent you with the truth! Since I accepted Islam, that camel has never run away." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said three times: "May Allah have mercy on you." Then after that he did not repeat anything about it.

Sayyiduna Khawwat bin Jubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: A man died and made me (his executor), and among what he left were his umm walad (a slave woman who had borne him a child) and a free woman. Then some words passed between the umm walad and that woman, and the woman said to her: "O foolish one! Tomorrow you will be taken by the ear and sold in the market." I mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "She will not be sold."
