Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Asid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) looked down at us from an upper room and said: "What are you talking about? What are you discussing?" We said: The Hour. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Listen, the Hour will not be established until you see ten signs: a sinking of the earth in the east, a sinking of the earth in the west, a sinking of the earth in the Arabian Peninsula, the emergence of Ya'juj and Ma'juj (Gog and Magog), the Dajjal, and the Beast of the Earth, the rising of the sun from the west, the descent of Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him), and a fire that will come out of the depths of Aden and drive the people along: where they stop at midday it will stop with them, and where they stop in the evening it will stop with them too; and finally a wind that will cast them into the sea."

We said: We are talking about the Hour. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Hour will not be established until ten signs appear: the rising of the sun from the west, the Dajjal, the Smoke, the Beast of the Earth (Dabbat al-Ard), and three sinkings of the earth: a sinking in the east, a sinking in the west, and a sinking in the Arabian Peninsula, and the emergence of Ya'juj and Ma'juj, and the emergence of a fire from the bottom of Aden which will surround the people, none being able to stay behind it, and will drive them to the land of the gathering. Then it will stay put until the people have seen to their needs, and then it will set them moving and send them onward." It is narrated from Abu Sarihah Hudhayfah bin Asid (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Beast of the Earth will emerge three times in the course of time. The first time it will emerge in the farthest part of Yemen, until talk of it spreads among the people of the desert, but the news will not enter the towns. Then it will remain hidden for a long time. Then it will emerge again near Makkah, and talk of it will spread among the people of the desert and spread in Makkah too. Then it will remain hidden for a long time. Then one day, while the people are in the mosque that is greatest in sanctity before Allah, the best and most honoured of them before Allah, that is, al-Masjid al-Haram, nothing will alarm them except that in that corner of the mosque, from between the Corner and the Maqam up to the door of Banu Makhzum, on the right of one leaving the mosque, the ground begins to swell. The people will scatter from it in panic, separately and together, while a group of the Muslims will stand firm, knowing that they cannot escape Allah. Then it will come out upon them, shaking the dust from its head. It will appear before them and make their faces shine until it leaves them like glittering stars. Then it will turn away into the earth; no pursuer will catch it and no fugitive will escape it, so much so that a man will stand in prayer to seek refuge from it, and it will come to him and say: O so-and-so! Now you pray? He will turn his face towards it, and it will put a mark on his face and then go away. And people will converse with one another in their homes and on their journeys, and they will be partners in wealth, and the disbeliever will be distinguished from the believer, so much so that the believer will say to the disbeliever: O disbeliever, pay me my due; and the disbeliever will say to the believer: O believer, pay me my due."

Abu al-Tufayl said: I heard Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) say: The wretched one is he who was decreed wretched while still in his mother's womb, and the fortunate one is he who takes admonition from the state of others. I left him marvelling at what I had heard, until I went to Abu Sarihah Hudhayfah bin Asid al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) and expressed my astonishment. He asked: What are you astonished at? I said: I heard your brother Ibn Mas'ud say that the wretched one is he who was decreed wretched in his mother's womb, and the fortunate one is he who takes admonition from the state of others. He asked: What part of that astonished you? I said: Can anyone be wretched without having done any deeds? So he moved both his hands towards his ears and said: With these very two ears of mine I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The drop of fluid remains in the womb for forty nights, then the angel shapes it" (the narrator said: I think he said: the very angel who creates it) "then he says: O Lord, is it male or female? So Allah makes it male or female. Then he says: O Lord, is it sound or defective? So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, makes it sound or defective. Then he says: O Lord, when and how will its death be? How will its make-up be? Then he says: O Lord, is it wretched or fortunate? So Allah Almighty makes it wretched or fortunate."

I said: The wretched one is he who was decreed wretched in his mother's womb, and the fortunate one is he who takes admonition from the state of others. Hudhayfah said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When forty-five nights have passed over the drop of fluid, the angel says: Is it male or female? So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, decrees and the angel writes it down. Then the angel says: Is it wretched or fortunate? So Allah decrees and the angel writes it down." He said: Then he says: Its provision, its term of life and its deeds? He said: So Allah decrees and the angel writes it down. Abu al-Tufayl Amir bin Wathilah said: Whenever Ibn Mas'ud addressed us in Kufah, he would say: The wretched one is he who was decreed wretched in his mother's womb, and the fortunate one is he who was decreed fortunate in his mother's womb. So I went to Hudhayfah bin Asid, one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and said: How astonishing is this saying of Ibn Umm Abd (Ibn Mas'ud), that the wretched one is he who was decreed wretched in his mother's womb! Hudhayfah said to me: O Abu al-Tufayl, what is there in that to astonish you? Shall I not tell you the reality of his wretchedness? And he narrated the hadith as a saying of the Prophet: "An angel is put in charge of the womb for forty-odd nights when Allah, by His will, wishes to create whatever He wills. He says: O Lord, is it male or female? So your Lord decrees and the angel writes it down. Then he says: O Lord, is it wretched or fortunate? So your Lord decrees and the angel writes it down. Hudhayfah said: What objection do you have to that? I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say many times: "When the drop of fluid settles in the womb and forty days pass over it" (and some of my companions said: forty-eight days) "the angel of the womb comes and shapes its bones, flesh, blood, hair, skin, hearing and sight. Then he says: O Lord, is it male or female? O Lord, is it wretched or fortunate? So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, decrees whatever He wills and it is written down. Then he says: O Lord, what will its provision be? So Allah decrees whatever He wills and it is written down. Then the scroll is rolled up, and it is not opened again until the Day of Resurrection."

Then he sent someone to have the thorns cleared from beneath them, and he himself went to those very trees and prayed beneath them. Then he stood up and said: "O people! Allah, the Subtle, the All-Aware, has informed me that no prophet lives more than half the lifespan of the prophet who came before him. I think that I am soon to be called and that I shall answer that call. I will be questioned and you too will be questioned, so what will you say?" The Companions said: We bear witness that you have conveyed the religion, striven and given sincere counsel; may Allah reward you with the best of rewards. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you not bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, that His Paradise is true and His Hell is true, that death is true, that being raised after death is true, that the Hour is coming, there is no doubt about it, and that Allah will raise those who are in the graves?" The Companions said: Yes indeed, we bear witness to that. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, bear witness." Then he said: "O people! Allah is my protector, and I am the protector of the believers, and I have a greater right over them than they have over themselves. So whoever I am the mawla of, this one (meaning Ali) is his mawla. O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him, and be hostile to whoever is hostile to him." Then he said: "O people! I will reach the Pond before you, and you will come to me at the Pond, a Pond whose breadth is as wide as the distance between Busra and San'a'. In it there are cups of silver as numerous as the stars. When you come to me, I will ask you about the two weighty trusts (al-thaqalayn), so take care how you treat them after me. The greater trust is the Book of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, a rope one end of which is in the hand of Allah and the other end in your hands; so hold on to it firmly, that you may not go astray and may not change. And my family, my household, are the other trust; for Allah, the Subtle, the All-Aware, has informed me that these two will never come to an end until they reach me at the Pond."
