Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 3028 — I heard Ibn Mas'ud telling the people

Amr bin Wathilah (Abu al-Tufayl) said: I heard Ibn Mas'ud telling the people in the mosque of Kufah: The wretched one is he who was decreed wretched in his mother's womb, and the fortunate one is he who takes admonition from the state of others. So I went to Hudhayfah bin Asid and said: I am astonished at this saying of Ibn Mas'ud, that the wretched one is he who was decreed wretched in his mother's womb, and the fortunate one is he who takes admonition from the state of others; so what is the fault of this child? Hudhayfah said: What objection do you have to that? I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say many times: "When the drop of fluid settles in the womb and forty days pass over it" (and some of my companions said: forty-eight days) "the angel of the womb comes and shapes its bones, flesh, blood, hair, skin, hearing and sight. Then he says: O Lord, is it male or female? O Lord, is it wretched or fortunate? So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, decrees whatever He wills and it is written down. Then he says: O Lord, what will its provision be? So Allah decrees whatever He wills and it is written down. Then the scroll is rolled up, and it is not opened again until the Day of Resurrection."
