Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 3032 — I heard Ibn Mas'ud saying: The wretched

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى بْنُ حَمَّادٍ النَّرْسِيُّ، ثنا وُهَيْبُ بْنُ خُثَيْمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الطُّفَيْلِ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ يَقُولُ: «الشَّقِيُّ مَنْ شَقِيَ فِي بَطْنِ أُمِّهِ، وَالسَّعِيدُ مَنْ وُعِظَ بِغَيْرِهِ» . فَأَتَيْتُ حُذَيْفَةَ، فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ بِقَوْلِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، فَقَالَ: " وَمَا يُنْكَرُ هَذَا يَا ابْنَ وَاثِلَةَ، وَأَنَا سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُهُ
Abu al-Tufayl said: I heard Ibn Mas'ud saying: The wretched one is he who was decreed wretched in his mother's womb, and the fortunate one is he who takes admonition from the state of others. So I went to Hudhayfah and told him what Ibn Mas'ud had said, and he said: "O Ibn Wathilah, what is there in this to deny? I myself heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say it."
