Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 3039 — When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was

Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Asid al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was returning from the Farewell Pilgrimage, he (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade his Companions to camp beneath some trees standing close together in the valley of al-Batha'. Then he sent someone to have the thorns cleared from beneath them, and he himself went to those very trees and prayed beneath them. Then he stood up and said: "O people! Allah, the Subtle, the All-Aware, has informed me that no prophet lives more than half the lifespan of the prophet who came before him. I think that I am soon to be called and that I shall answer that call. I will be questioned and you too will be questioned, so what will you say?" The Companions said: We bear witness that you have conveyed the religion, striven and given sincere counsel; may Allah reward you with the best of rewards. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you not bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, that His Paradise is true and His Hell is true, that death is true, that being raised after death is true, that the Hour is coming, there is no doubt about it, and that Allah will raise those who are in the graves?" The Companions said: Yes indeed, we bear witness to that. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, bear witness." Then he said: "O people! Allah is my protector, and I am the protector of the believers, and I have a greater right over them than they have over themselves. So whoever I am the mawla of, this one (meaning Ali) is his mawla. O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him, and be hostile to whoever is hostile to him." Then he said: "O people! I will reach the Pond before you, and you will come to me at the Pond, a Pond whose breadth is as wide as the distance between Busra and San'a'. In it there are cups of silver as numerous as the stars. When you come to me, I will ask you about the two weighty trusts (al-thaqalayn), so take care how you treat them after me. The greater trust is the Book of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, a rope one end of which is in the hand of Allah and the other end in your hands; so hold on to it firmly, that you may not go astray and may not change. And my family, my household, are the other trust; for Allah, the Subtle, the All-Aware, has informed me that these two will never come to an end until they reach me at the Pond."
