Lineage of Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) — Reports narrated by Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), and the variation in al-Zuhri's hadith on the plague

Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When plague breaks out in a land and you are there, do not leave it fleeing from it; and when plague breaks out in a land and you are not there, do not enter it." Imam al-Tabarani (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid bin Tamim and Sufyan bin Husayn narrated it like this, while Ibn Abi Dhi'b differed from the two of them.

It is narrated from Salim bin Abdullah bin Amir bin Rabi'ah (may Allah have mercy on him) that Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) informed Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) - when he was on the road to Syria and the news reached him that plague had broken out there - of this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "This sickness - or this illness - is a punishment with which those before you were punished. So when it is in a land where you are not present, do not go there; and when it is in a land where you are present, do not leave it fleeing from it." The narrator said: So Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) returned with the people that same year.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When you hear of it (the plague) in a land, do not go there; and when it breaks out in a land where you are present, do not leave it fleeing from it."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When you hear of it (the plague) in a land, do not go there; and when it breaks out in a land where you are present, do not leave it fleeing from it."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When you hear of this epidemic in a town, do not go there; and when it breaks out while you are there, do not leave it fleeing from it."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When you hear of it in a land, do not go there; and when it breaks out in a land where you are present, let fleeing not drive you out of it."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When you hear of it in a land, do not go there; and when it breaks out while you are there, do not leave it fleeing from it."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This epidemic is a punishment with which Allah destroyed some nations, and a part of it has remained in the earth, which sometimes comes and sometimes goes. So when it breaks out in a land where you are present, do not leave it; and when you hear of it in a land, do not go there."

Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This sickness - or illness - is a punishment with which some nations before you were punished; then it remained in the earth, sometimes going away and sometimes coming. So whoever hears of it in a land should not go there, and whoever is in a land where it breaks out, let fleeing not drive him out of it." (These are the words of al-Layth's narration.)

Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The plague was mentioned in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is a punishment that befell those before you - or a torment that befell those before you. So when you hear of it in a town, do not enter it; and when it breaks out in a town where you are present, do not leave it fleeing from it."

Amir bin Sa'd narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This epidemic is something with which the nations before you were punished, and a part of it has remained in the earth, which sometimes breaks out and sometimes goes away. So when it breaks out in a land where you are present, do not leave it; and when it breaks out in a land where you are not present, do not enter it."

Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The plague was mentioned in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is a filth (a punishment) that befell those before you. So when you hear of it in a town, do not enter it; and when it breaks out in a town where you are present, do not leave it fleeing from it."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you hear of it in a land, do not enter it; and when it breaks out in a land where you are present, do not leave it fleeing from it."

Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman bin Awf narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: Which part of the night is most listened to (for supplication)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The middle of the last part of the night. Then prayer is accepted until the Fajr prayer is performed; then there is no prayer for a while until the sun has risen the measure of one or two spears; then prayer is accepted until the shadow stands upright like a spear; then there is no prayer until the sun passes the meridian; then prayer is accepted until the sun is at the measure of one or two spears (above the horizon); then there is no prayer until the sun sets." The narrator said: Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Any Muslim man who frees a Muslim man, that is his release from Hell: for every bone of the one freed, a bone of the one who frees will be saved (from Hell). And any Muslim woman who frees a Muslim woman, that is her release from Hell: for every bone of the one freed, a bone of the one who frees will be saved (from Hell). And any Muslim man who frees two Muslim women, the two of them are his release from Hell: for two bones of theirs, one bone of his will be saved."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) missed one of his Companions and said: "Where were you? I did not see you. Did you not attend the prayer?" He said: Of course I did, but I came when the people had already settled in their rows, and I disliked stepping over the people's necks. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You did well."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The official ('amil), when he is appointed and takes what is due and gives what is due, is like one who strives (mujahid) in the path of Allah until he returns to his home."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The prayer of al-hajir (midday) is part of the night prayer." The narrator said: I asked Abd al-Rahman bin Humayd about "al-hajir" and he said: When the sun passes the meridian.

Abd al-Rahman bin Humayd narrates from his father, who said: Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) heard a man of Banu Hashim saying: I am the person with the greatest claim to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So he said: "Someone other than you has a greater claim to him than you, though you do share his lineage."

Al-Walid bin Ibrahim bin Abd al-Rahman bin Awf narrates from his father, from his grandfather, who said: Umamah bint Abi al-As became gravely ill, so Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), sent a message to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying that her daughter was gravely ill. He (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a message to his daughter: "What Allah has taken belongs to Allah, and what He has left also belongs to Allah." A second time the illness became severe, and she sent him a message that her daughter was gravely ill, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent his daughter the same message: "What Allah has taken belongs to Allah, and what He has left also belongs to Allah." Then it happened a third time, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to her himself. She brought the little girl out and presented her to him (peace and blessings be upon him), while her breath was rattling in her chest, and with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were some of his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions. Tears began to flow from his (peace and blessings be upon him) eyes, until he (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of his blessed beard. He (peace and blessings be upon him) perceived that the Companions were looking at him, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is the matter with you, that you are looking?" They said: O Messenger of Allah, we saw that you were moved to tenderness. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is mercy, which Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, places wherever He wills, and tomorrow, on the Day of Resurrection, Allah will show mercy only to those of His servants who are merciful."

Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), concerning this saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "Then, after the distress, He sent down upon you security in the form of drowsiness" [Al Imran: 154], said: "On the day of Uhud sleep was cast over us."

Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman bin Awf narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A little understanding (of the religion) is better than a great deal of worship, and the best of your deeds are the easiest of them."

Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman narrates from his father, who said: Talhah said something (unpleasant) to Amir bin Fuhayrah, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Wait a moment, O Talhah! He too took part in Badr just as you did, and the best of you is the one who is best to his slaves."

Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman narrates from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Satan - may Allah curse him - said: The owner of wealth will not escape me in one of three things, which I pursue him with morning and evening: either he acquires the wealth unlawfully, or he spends it where it has no right to be spent, or I make that wealth so beloved to him that he holds back from paying what is due on it."
