حَدَّثَنَا الْمِقْدَامُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ، ثنا ذُؤَيْبُ بْنُ عِمَامَةَ، ثنا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ سَالِمٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ حُمَيْدٍ، يَذْكُرُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: سَمِعَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ رَجُلًا مِنْ بَنِي هَاشِمٍ يَقُولُ: أَنَا أَوْلَى النَّاسِ بِرَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ. فَقَالَ: «غَيْرُهُ أَوْلَى بِهِ مِنْكَ وَلَكَ نَسَبُهُ»
Abd al-Rahman bin Humayd narrates from his father, who said: Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) heard a man of Banu Hashim saying: I am the person with the greatest claim to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So he said: "Someone other than you has a greater claim to him than you, though you do share his lineage."
