It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Dreams are of three levels (kinds): one is what is merely the thoughts of a person's own self, and they have no reality; one is what comes from Satan (as a whispering), so when a person sees something he dislikes, let him seek refuge in Allah by saying 'A'udhu billahi min al-shaytan al-rajim' (I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of Satan the accursed), and let him spit (lightly) to his left, for after this act that dream will never harm him; and one is what consists of glad tidings from Allah. The dream of a believer is one part of the forty-six parts of prophethood, so let him present his dream only to someone of insight and a sincere well-wisher, and (such an adviser) should say something good and give only a good interpretation."
Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said (in view of its virtue): "Even if it (this part of prophethood) were equal to only one pebble out of a great number of pebbles, it would still be a great deal."
It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you sees a dream, let him present it to a sympathetic well-wisher, who should say something good and also interpret it with goodness and blessing."
I (Ibn Hajar) say: Al-Nasa'i recorded it from the narration of Ibn Ishaq, but it is not included in his book al-Mujtaba, while Bukhari, Muslim and other hadith scholars narrated it as the basic hadith from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari, Muhammad bin Amr, al-Zuhri and other imams, through Abu Salamah. However, in this version there are additional matters that are not found with them, nor is the report of Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) found with them.
2845 - Humayd bin Hilal (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), at the time when she was staying among her family, said in relating her dream: "I saw (in a dream) as if I and this person whom Allah has sent (as a Messenger) (that is, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) were together, and an angel was carrying us along on his wing." So her family rejected this dream of hers (calling it bad) and spoke harshly to her.

It is narrated from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him): "Indeed, I saw in a dream that three moons fell into my chamber (or the narrator said, with doubt: into my lap)." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "This is entirely a matter of goodness."
Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I heard people mentioning that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was buried in the blessed chamber of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) said to her: "This is one of those moons of yours (seen in the dream), and he is the best of them all."

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: "I saw (in a dream) as if three moons had fallen into my chamber, so I asked Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) about it. He said: 'O Aishah, if this dream of yours proves true, the three best souls on the face of the earth will be buried in your house.' Then, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was buried (in my chamber), Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: 'O Aishah, this one (the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)) is the best and most excellent of those moons of yours, and he is one of those three (that is, the first).'"
Al-Hakim graded it sahih (authentic) through this chain, and he also narrated it as marfu' from the hadith of Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah and Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a long sermon to us, in which there was also (this saying): "And whoever falsely claims (attributing it to himself) a dream that he did not actually see is like one who gave false testimony, and on the Day of Resurrection he will be charged with the arduous task of tying a knot between two grains of barley, and he will continue to be punished until he ties a knot between them, yet he will never be able to do so."
The chain of this report contains narrators such as Dawud bin al-Muhabbar and Maysarah bin Abd Rabbih, who are liars and fabricators, because of which this report is mawdu' (fabricated); however, the warning about tying a knot between two grains of barley is established in Sahih al-Bukhari (no. 7042) through other reliable and sahih chains.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The true dream of a Muslim is one part of the forty parts of prophethood." At this Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Rather, it is one part of sixty parts." So Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said (in astonishment): "He heard me saying that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said (that it is forty parts), and despite that he is saying 'of sixty parts'?" Then Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) replied: "And I too am saying (not from myself, but) that Sayyiduna al-Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated (this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him))."
Amr bin al-Naqid said: I and our companions said that, in our view, if Allah wills, its meaning is that this report is narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) through Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). In the narration of al-Bazzar, Muhammad bin Ishaq mentioned it with these words: "The dream of a believer is glad tidings from Allah Almighty, and it is one part of the forty-six parts of prophethood." The narrator said: When I narrated this hadith to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said: Sayyiduna al-Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is one part of the fifty parts of prophethood."

It is narrated from al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) and Sayyiduna Abu al-Tufayl (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tonight I was drawing water (in a dream) when suddenly some black sheep and some sheep of a whitish-brown colour came to me. Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came forward and drew one or two buckets, but there was some weakness in his drawing; may Allah Almighty forgive him. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and the bucket turned into a very large bucket. He (drew water with it and) filled all the troughs and gave water to everyone who came, and I have not seen among people any genius and person of excellence like Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), who drew water with such skill and strength as he did. I interpreted this dream to mean that the black sheep are the Arabs and the whitish-brown sheep are the non-Arabs."
In the narration of al-Bazzar it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu al-Tufayl (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I saw in my sleep black sheep followed by whitish-brown sheep, and I interpreted the black sheep as the Arabs and the whitish-brown sheep as the non-Arabs."

It is narrated from Abu Mijlaz (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I saw in a dream that the top part of my head was cut off, and I myself was looking at it (my severed head). The narrator states that on hearing this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled and then asked: "When your head had been cut off, with which eye were you looking at it?" The narrator said: Only a short time after this incident the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, so the people of knowledge interpreted the cutting off of that man's head as the death of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and his looking at it as following and adhering to his (peace and blessings be upon him) Sunnahs.
