It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Dreams are of three levels (kinds): one is what is merely the thoughts of a person's own self, and they have no reality; one is what comes from Satan (as a whispering), so when a person sees something he dislikes, let him seek refuge in Allah by saying 'A'udhu billahi min al-shaytan al-rajim' (I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of Satan the accursed), and let him spit (lightly) to his left, for after this act that dream will never harm him; and one is what consists of glad tidings from Allah. The dream of a believer is one part of the forty-six parts of prophethood, so let him present his dream only to someone of insight and a sincere well-wisher, and (such an adviser) should say something good and give only a good interpretation."
Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said (in view of its virtue): "Even if it (this part of prophethood) were equal to only one pebble out of a great number of pebbles, it would still be a great deal."
It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you sees a dream, let him present it to a sympathetic well-wisher, who should say something good and also interpret it with goodness and blessing."
I (Ibn Hajar) say: Al-Nasa'i recorded it from the narration of Ibn Ishaq, but it is not included in his book al-Mujtaba, while Bukhari, Muslim and other hadith scholars narrated it as the basic hadith from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari, Muhammad bin Amr, al-Zuhri and other imams, through Abu Salamah. However, in this version there are additional matters that are not found with them, nor is the report of Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) found with them.
2845 - Humayd bin Hilal (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), at the time when she was staying among her family, said in relating her dream: "I saw (in a dream) as if I and this person whom Allah has sent (as a Messenger) (that is, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) were together, and an angel was carrying us along on his wing." So her family rejected this dream of hers (calling it bad) and spoke harshly to her.
