Uqbah bin Wassaj says that Abu Lubabah (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting with Ka'b (may Allah have mercy on him), and Abu Lubabah said: "The garment of arrogance is a very evil garment." Ka'b asked: "Did you hear this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" Abu Lubabah said: "No." Thereupon Ka'b said: "I do not reject your knowledge (i.e. I do not call what you say wrong), but I find in the Book of Allah (the Torah): 'Whoever wears a garment of arrogance, Allah Almighty will not look at him (with mercy) until he takes it off, even if that (pride) is great.'"
After this Abu Lubabah said: "The heart of a fat person is an evil heart." Ka'b asked: "Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" Abu Lubabah said: "No." Ka'b said: "I do not reject your knowledge (i.e. I do not call what you say wrong). I find in the Book of Allah Almighty (the Torah): 'The example of the heart of a fat person and of a thin person is like a fat goat and a thin goat struck by rain: the effect of the rain reaches the heart of the thin goat and does not reach the heart of the fat goat (i.e. it has no effect on the fat heart).'" Thereupon Abu Lubabah said: "Whoever worships Allah, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, suffices him in all his needs (the toil of livelihood and provision)." Ka'b asked: "Did you hear this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" Abu Lubabah said: "No." Thereupon Ka'b said: "I do not reject your knowledge, and I find in the Book of Allah Almighty (the Torah): 'There is no servant who worships Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, except that Allah Almighty guarantees his provision from the heavens and the earth, until he dies, or for as long as he lives.'"

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man from the nations before you went out wearing two costly cloaks and began to strut proudly in them. So Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, commanded the earth, and the earth seized him (and swallowed him), and he will keep sinking into the depths of the earth until the Day of Resurrection."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that "the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed us in a sermon and in it he also said: 'Whoever wears a garment and struts in it (i.e. displays arrogance), he will be swallowed into the earth from the edge of Hell, and he will keep tumbling and falling in it for as long as the heavens and the earth endure. That is because Qarun wore a costly suit of clothes and strutted in it with arrogance, so he was swallowed into the earth, and he will keep tumbling and falling in it until the Day of Resurrection.'"

Rishdin bin Kurayb narrates from his father (Kurayb) that he heard Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him), while walking in the lane of Abu Lahab, saying that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man was coming along strutting in his two cloaks, having let his waist-wrap hang down; he was looking at his own sides and walking proudly, when suddenly Allah Almighty made the earth swallow him, so he will keep sinking and tumbling in it until the Day of Resurrection."
Marwan bin Mu'awiyah narrated it in this way, while Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad al-Muharibi differed from him and narrated it from Rishdin bin Kurayb, from his father, from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both).
Abu Ya'la narrated from Abd al-Rahman al-Muharibi, from Ibn Kurayb, from his father, from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both); (Kurayb) says: "I was leading (Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both)) by the hand in the lane of Abu Lahab, and he said: 'O Kurayb! Have we reached such-and-such a place?' I said: 'You are at that very place now.' So he said: 'Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to me; he said: "While I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at this very place, a man came along strutting in his two cloaks, looking at his own sides, greatly pleased with himself, when suddenly, at this very spot, the earth swallowed him, so he will keep sinking and tumbling in it until the Day of Resurrection."'"

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a Bedouin came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). (The narrator) related the whole hadith, and at its end (there was also this saying of his (peace and blessings be upon him)): "Beware! Avoid dragging the waist-wrap (i.e. the lower garment) below the ankles, for dragging the waist-wrap (out of pride and arrogance) is part of self-conceit and vanity."
I (Ibn Hajar) say: This hadith of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) is in the Sahih (the authentic hadith collections) with wording different from this.

It is narrated from Hushaym (H).
And Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah says that Muhammad bin Fudayl narrated to us; both of them from Husayn, from Abu al-Hajjaj, from Sa'id al-Thaqafi, from a man of his people, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man dragging his waist-wrap (izar) along the ground, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Raise your waist-wrap, for Allah Almighty does not love the arrogant." The man said: "O Messenger of Allah, there is thinness (or weakness) in my shins." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This (dragging the waist-wrap out of arrogance) is even worse than the thinness of your shins."

Abdullah bin Ahmad recorded this narration in his book Ziyadat al-Zuhd, that Ali bin Muslim narrated to him, from Sayyar, from Yazid bin Zuray', from Umar, the freed slave of Sallam bin Abi Muti', who said: I heard Bakr bin Abdullah al-Muzani say in the mosque of Basrah: "Those among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (may Allah be pleased with them all) who wore (fine) clothes did not criticize those who wore (simple) clothes, and those who wore (simple) clothes did not criticize those who wore (fine) clothes."
