قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ : أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَارِثِ ، ثَنَا هَمَّامُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ وَسَّاجٍ ، قَالَ : كَانَ أَبُو لُبَابَةَ جَالِسًا مَعَ كَعْبٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، [فَقَالَ أَبُو لُبَابَةَ ] : بِئْسَ الثَّوْبُ ثَوْبُ الْخُيَلَاءِ . فَقَالَ كَعْبٌ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : أَسَمِعْتَهُ مِنَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ قَالَ : لَا ، قَالَ : إِنِّي لَا أَرُدُّ عَلَيْكَ عِلْمَكَ إِنِّي لَأَجِدُ فِي كِتَابِ اللهِ : مَنْ لَبِسَ ثَوْبَ خُيَلَاءَ لَمْ يَنْظُرِ اللهُ إِلَيْهِ حَتَّى يَضَعَهُ وَإِنْ كَانَ كَبُرَ .
فَقَالَ أَبُو لُبَابَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : " بِئْسَ الْقَلْبُ قَلْبُ السَّمِينِ ، فَقَالَ كَعْبٌ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : أَسَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ فَقَالَ : لَا . قَالَ كَعْبٌ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : إِنِّي لَا أَرُدُّ عَلَيْكَ عِلْمَكَ . إِنِّي أَجِدُ فِي كِتَابِ اللهِ تَعَالَى : مَثَلُ السَّمِينِ وَقَلْبِ الْمَهْزُولِ كَمَثَلِ شَاةٍ سَمِينَةٍ وَشَاةٍ مَهْزُولَةٍ أَصَابَهُمَا الْمَطَرُ فَخَلَصَ إِلَى قَلْبِ الْمَهْزُولَةِ ، وَلَمْ يَخْلُصْ إِلَى قَلْبِ السَّمِينَةِ . فَقَالَ أَبُو لُبَابَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : [مَنْ يَعْبُدُ اللهَ] كَفَاهُ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ الْمُؤْنَةَ ، فَقَالَ كَعْبٌ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : أَسَمِعْتَهُ مِنَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ فَقَالَ : لَا . فَقَالَ : إِنِّي لَا أَرُدُّ عَلَيْكَ عِلْمَكَ ، وَإِنِّي لَأَجِدُ فِي كِتَابِ اللهِ تَعَالَى : مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ يَعْبُدُ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ إِلَّا ضَمِنَ اللهُ تَعَالَى السَّمَاءَ وَالْأَرْضَ بِرِزْقِهِ حَتَّى يَمُوتَ أَوْ [مَا] عَاشَ " .
فَقَالَ أَبُو لُبَابَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : " بِئْسَ الْقَلْبُ قَلْبُ السَّمِينِ ، فَقَالَ كَعْبٌ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : أَسَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ فَقَالَ : لَا . قَالَ كَعْبٌ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : إِنِّي لَا أَرُدُّ عَلَيْكَ عِلْمَكَ . إِنِّي أَجِدُ فِي كِتَابِ اللهِ تَعَالَى : مَثَلُ السَّمِينِ وَقَلْبِ الْمَهْزُولِ كَمَثَلِ شَاةٍ سَمِينَةٍ وَشَاةٍ مَهْزُولَةٍ أَصَابَهُمَا الْمَطَرُ فَخَلَصَ إِلَى قَلْبِ الْمَهْزُولَةِ ، وَلَمْ يَخْلُصْ إِلَى قَلْبِ السَّمِينَةِ . فَقَالَ أَبُو لُبَابَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : [مَنْ يَعْبُدُ اللهَ] كَفَاهُ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ الْمُؤْنَةَ ، فَقَالَ كَعْبٌ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : أَسَمِعْتَهُ مِنَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ فَقَالَ : لَا . فَقَالَ : إِنِّي لَا أَرُدُّ عَلَيْكَ عِلْمَكَ ، وَإِنِّي لَأَجِدُ فِي كِتَابِ اللهِ تَعَالَى : مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ يَعْبُدُ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ إِلَّا ضَمِنَ اللهُ تَعَالَى السَّمَاءَ وَالْأَرْضَ بِرِزْقِهِ حَتَّى يَمُوتَ أَوْ [مَا] عَاشَ " .
Uqbah bin Wassaj says that Abu Lubabah (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting with Ka'b (may Allah have mercy on him), and Abu Lubabah said: "The garment of arrogance is a very evil garment." Ka'b asked: "Did you hear this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" Abu Lubabah said: "No." Thereupon Ka'b said: "I do not reject your knowledge (i.e. I do not call what you say wrong), but I find in the Book of Allah (the Torah): 'Whoever wears a garment of arrogance, Allah Almighty will not look at him (with mercy) until he takes it off, even if that (pride) is great.'"
After this Abu Lubabah said: "The heart of a fat person is an evil heart." Ka'b asked: "Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" Abu Lubabah said: "No." Ka'b said: "I do not reject your knowledge (i.e. I do not call what you say wrong). I find in the Book of Allah Almighty (the Torah): 'The example of the heart of a fat person and of a thin person is like a fat goat and a thin goat struck by rain: the effect of the rain reaches the heart of the thin goat and does not reach the heart of the fat goat (i.e. it has no effect on the fat heart).'" Thereupon Abu Lubabah said: "Whoever worships Allah, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, suffices him in all his needs (the toil of livelihood and provision)." Ka'b asked: "Did you hear this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" Abu Lubabah said: "No." Thereupon Ka'b said: "I do not reject your knowledge, and I find in the Book of Allah Almighty (the Torah): 'There is no servant who worships Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, except that Allah Almighty guarantees his provision from the heavens and the earth, until he dies, or for as long as he lives.'"
