Rashid, the freed slave of Habib bin Aws al-Thaqafi, said: Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) told me this personally. He said: When we returned from the Battle of the Trench, I gathered some men of Quraysh who knew my standing and listened to me, and I said to them: By Allah! You know that I see the affair of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) rising to prominence, which is something objectionable; so I have thought of a plan. What do you say about it? They asked: What is your plan? I said: I think we should go to the Negus (al-Najashi) and stay there. If Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) prevails over our people, we will remain with the Negus, for living under his authority is dearer to us than being under the authority of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). And if our people prevail, we are people whose standing our people know, and only good will come to us from them. They said: This is a good plan. I said to them: Then prepare goods for the Negus to be given to him as a gift. Of the things of our land, the gift he liked most was leather, so we gathered a great deal of leather for him. Then we set out until we came to him. When we reached him, at that very time Amr bin Umayyah al-Damri (who was a Muslim) came out from his presence; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had sent him to the Negus concerning Ja'far and his companions. As we were going in to the Negus, he was coming out from there. I said to my companions: This is Amr bin Umayyah. If I go to the Negus and ask him for this man, he will give him to me, and I will strike off his head; and when I do that, Quraysh will think that I have avenged them by killing the messenger of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When I went in to the Negus, I prostrated to him as I used to do before. He said: Welcome to my friend! Have you brought me a gift from your land? I said: O King! Yes! Then I said: O King! I have brought you a great deal of leather as a gift. Then I presented it to him, and he liked it and was pleased with it. Then I said: O King! I saw a man leaving your presence; he is the messenger of our enemy. Hand that man over to us so that I may kill him, for he has harmed our nobles and our best people. Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Negus became angry; he stretched out his hand and struck my nose so hard that I thought he had broken it. Out of fear of him at that moment I thought that if the earth were to split open, I would go into it. Then I said: O King! By Allah! Had I known that you would dislike this, I would never have made this request. He said: You ask me to hand over to you, so that you may kill him, the messenger of the one to whom comes the "Great Namus" who used to come to Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him)? The narrator says: I said: O King! Is it really so? He said: Woe to you, O Amr! Obey me and follow him, for, by Allah, he is upon the truth, and he will certainly prevail over those who oppose him, just as Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) prevailed over Pharaoh and his armies. Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said: Then will you take my pledge of allegiance to Islam on his behalf? He said: Very well. Then he stretched out his hand and took the pledge of allegiance to Islam from Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator says: Then I went out to my companions, and the opinion I had held before had changed. I concealed my Islam from my companions, then I set out to go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). On the way I met Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him); this was a little before the Conquest of Makkah, and he was coming from the direction of Makkah. I asked: O Abu Sulayman! Where are you going? He said: By Allah! The way has become clear; that man is truly a Prophet. I am going to accept Islam; how much longer shall I delay it? Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said: By Allah! I too have come only to accept Islam. The narrator says: Then we came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) stepped forward, accepted Islam and then gave his pledge. Then I came forward and said: O Messenger of Allah! I will pledge allegiance to you on the condition that my past sins are forgiven. The narrator says: The shortcomings that would come later did not occur to me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Amr! Pledge allegiance, for Islam wipes out all the shortcomings before it, and emigration wipes out everything before it. The narrator says: So I pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and then went back. Ibn Ishaq said: A person whom I do not suspect narrated
this report to me: that Sayyiduna Uthman bin Talhah bin Abi Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam along with those two men when they accepted Islam.
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Tabarani recorded this report, but he recorded these words: Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) told me this personally, and my ears heard it. The narrators of both reports are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Alqamah bin Ramthah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) to Bahrain. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out on a military expedition, and we went with him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dozed off, and he said: May Allah Almighty have mercy on Amr. We recalled every person whose name was Amr. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dozed off again, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: May Allah Almighty have mercy on Amr. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dozed off a third time, and when he woke up he said: May Allah Almighty have mercy on Amr. We said: O Messenger of Allah! Who is meant by Amr? He said: Amr bin al-As. We said: What about him? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whenever I urged the people to give charity, Amr would come and give a great deal of it. I would say: O Amr! Where did you get this from? He would say: It is from Allah Almighty. And Amr spoke the truth; there is much good for him with Allah Almighty. Zuhayr bin Qays said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, I thought that I would stay with that man about whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that there is much good for him with Allah Almighty.
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Tabarani recorded this report, but he recorded these words: The narrator Zuhayr said: When the time of the fitnah (strife) came, I thought that I would stay with that man about whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this. The narrators of Imam Ahmad and of one of al-Tabarani's two chains are thiqat (trustworthy).

Muhammad bin Ishaq said: Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid and Sayyiduna Uthman bin Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam in the presence of the Negus, and then they came to Madinah in the month of Safar in the eighth year of the Hijrah. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: That these men accepted Islam on one and the same day is well known; but as for Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Uthman bin Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) accepting Islam with the Negus,
I have found this only as a statement of Ibn Ishaq. And Allah knows best.

Have you not seen what he has done to the people? Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Leave him! For the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made him our commander, because he has thorough knowledge of war.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this report as a "mursal" report, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except for al-Mundhir bin Tha'labah, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for me and said: Put on your clothes and your weapons, then come to me! The narrator says: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was performing ablution (wudu). He raised his gaze and looked at me, then lowered his head, and then said: I want to send you as commander of an army; may Allah Almighty keep you safe and grant you spoils, and I have a good wish for you with regard to wealth. I said: O Messenger of Allah! I did not accept Islam for the sake of wealth; I accepted Islam out of desire for Islam, so that I may be with the Messenger of Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Amr! Good wealth is good when it is with a good man.
Imam Ahmad recorded this report, and he says: In the manuscript the word is thus, "na'imma", with a fathah on the "nun" and a kasrah on the "ayn"; Abu Ubaydah says: with a kasrah on the "nun" and a kasrah on the "ayn" as well.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this report in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and in it he recorded these words: "I did so out of desire for Islam and desire to be with the Messenger of Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Very well; good wealth is good when it is with a good man." The narrators of Imam Ahmad and Imam Abu Ya'la are the narrators of the Sahih.

Muhammad bin al-Aswad bin Khalaf said: We were sitting in the Hatim with some people of Quraysh when it was said that Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) had arrived that night. The narrator says: We kept talking about him a great deal, and meanwhile he came to us, and we began to look towards him. He performed tawaf, then offered two rak'ahs in the Hatim, and then said: Were you talking about me? We said: We were speaking of you only in good terms. We mentioned you and (your brother) Sayyiduna Hisham bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him), and we discussed which of you two is more virtuous. Some said that this one is more virtuous, and some said that Hisham is more virtuous. Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will tell you about that. I (and my brother) accepted Islam; we loved the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and were sincere to him. Then Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), mentioning the Battle of Yarmuk, said: I took hold of the tent pole, then I took a ritual bath (ghusl), then I applied perfume, then I put on a shroud. We presented ourselves to Allah Almighty, and Allah Almighty accepted him (that is, granted him martyrdom), so in this respect he is better than me. Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said this three times.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this report; its chain contains a narrator, Abu Amr, a freed slave of Banu Umayyah, whom I do not know, and the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Abu Nawfal bin Abi Aqrab said: At the time of death, a state of severe distress came over Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him). When his son Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) saw him in this condition, he said: O Abu Abdullah! What is the reason for this distress? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) kept you close to him and appointed you as governor. Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O my son! That did happen, but I will tell you about it. By Allah! I do not know whether the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did that out of love, or to win my heart. However, I bear witness concerning two men that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) departed from this world, he loved them both: one is Ibn Sumayyah (that is, Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him)), and the other is Ibn Umm Abd (that is, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him)). The narrator says: When his condition began to worsen greatly, he placed his hand on his chin at the place where the iron collar goes, and said: O Allah! You commanded us, and we abandoned it; You forbade us, and we did those things. Now only Your forgiveness can suffice us. The narrator says: These remained his words until he passed away. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Part of this report is mentioned in the "Sahih".
Imam Ahmad recorded this report, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
