Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for me and said: Put on your clothes and your weapons, then come to me! The narrator says: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was performing ablution (wudu). He raised his gaze and looked at me, then lowered his head, and then said: I want to send you as commander of an army; may Allah Almighty keep you safe and grant you spoils, and I have a good wish for you with regard to wealth. I said: O Messenger of Allah! I did not accept Islam for the sake of wealth; I accepted Islam out of desire for Islam, so that I may be with the Messenger of Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Amr! Good wealth is good when it is with a good man.
Imam Ahmad recorded this report, and he says: In the manuscript the word is thus, "na'imma", with a fathah on the "nun" and a kasrah on the "ayn"; Abu Ubaydah says: with a kasrah on the "nun" and a kasrah on the "ayn" as well.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this report in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and in it he recorded these words: "I did so out of desire for Islam and desire to be with the Messenger of Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Very well; good wealth is good when it is with a good man." The narrators of Imam Ahmad and Imam Abu Ya'la are the narrators of the Sahih.
