Muhammad bin al-Aswad bin Khalaf said: We were sitting in the Hatim with some people of Quraysh when it was said that Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) had arrived that night. The narrator says: We kept talking about him a great deal, and meanwhile he came to us, and we began to look towards him. He performed tawaf, then offered two rak'ahs in the Hatim, and then said: Were you talking about me? We said: We were speaking of you only in good terms. We mentioned you and (your brother) Sayyiduna Hisham bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him), and we discussed which of you two is more virtuous. Some said that this one is more virtuous, and some said that Hisham is more virtuous. Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will tell you about that. I (and my brother) accepted Islam; we loved the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and were sincere to him. Then Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), mentioning the Battle of Yarmuk, said: I took hold of the tent pole, then I took a ritual bath (ghusl), then I applied perfume, then I put on a shroud. We presented ourselves to Allah Almighty, and Allah Almighty accepted him (that is, granted him martyrdom), so in this respect he is better than me. Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said this three times.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this report; its chain contains a narrator, Abu Amr, a freed slave of Banu Umayyah, whom I do not know, and the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
