Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 15899

Abu Nawfal bin Abi Aqrab said: At the time of death, a state of severe distress came over Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him). When his son Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) saw him in this condition, he said: O Abu Abdullah! What is the reason for this distress? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) kept you close to him and appointed you as governor. Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O my son! That did happen, but I will tell you about it. By Allah! I do not know whether the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did that out of love, or to win my heart. However, I bear witness concerning two men that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) departed from this world, he loved them both: one is Ibn Sumayyah (that is, Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him)), and the other is Ibn Umm Abd (that is, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him)). The narrator says: When his condition began to worsen greatly, he placed his hand on his chin at the place where the iron collar goes, and said: O Allah! You commanded us, and we abandoned it; You forbade us, and we did those things. Now only Your forgiveness can suffice us. The narrator says: These remained his words until he passed away. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Part of this report is mentioned in the "Sahih".
Imam Ahmad recorded this report, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
