Rashid, the freed slave of Habib bin Aws al-Thaqafi, said: Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) told me this personally. He said: When we returned from the Battle of the Trench, I gathered some men of Quraysh who knew my standing and listened to me, and I said to them: By Allah! You know that I see the affair of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) rising to prominence, which is something objectionable; so I have thought of a plan. What do you say about it? They asked: What is your plan? I said: I think we should go to the Negus (al-Najashi) and stay there. If Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) prevails over our people, we will remain with the Negus, for living under his authority is dearer to us than being under the authority of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). And if our people prevail, we are people whose standing our people know, and only good will come to us from them. They said: This is a good plan. I said to them: Then prepare goods for the Negus to be given to him as a gift. Of the things of our land, the gift he liked most was leather, so we gathered a great deal of leather for him. Then we set out until we came to him. When we reached him, at that very time Amr bin Umayyah al-Damri (who was a Muslim) came out from his presence; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had sent him to the Negus concerning Ja'far and his companions. As we were going in to the Negus, he was coming out from there. I said to my companions: This is Amr bin Umayyah. If I go to the Negus and ask him for this man, he will give him to me, and I will strike off his head; and when I do that, Quraysh will think that I have avenged them by killing the messenger of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When I went in to the Negus, I prostrated to him as I used to do before. He said: Welcome to my friend! Have you brought me a gift from your land? I said: O King! Yes! Then I said: O King! I have brought you a great deal of leather as a gift. Then I presented it to him, and he liked it and was pleased with it. Then I said: O King! I saw a man leaving your presence; he is the messenger of our enemy. Hand that man over to us so that I may kill him, for he has harmed our nobles and our best people. Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Negus became angry; he stretched out his hand and struck my nose so hard that I thought he had broken it. Out of fear of him at that moment I thought that if the earth were to split open, I would go into it. Then I said: O King! By Allah! Had I known that you would dislike this, I would never have made this request. He said: You ask me to hand over to you, so that you may kill him, the messenger of the one to whom comes the "Great Namus" who used to come to Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him)? The narrator says: I said: O King! Is it really so? He said: Woe to you, O Amr! Obey me and follow him, for, by Allah, he is upon the truth, and he will certainly prevail over those who oppose him, just as Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) prevailed over Pharaoh and his armies. Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said: Then will you take my pledge of allegiance to Islam on his behalf? He said: Very well. Then he stretched out his hand and took the pledge of allegiance to Islam from Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator says: Then I went out to my companions, and the opinion I had held before had changed. I concealed my Islam from my companions, then I set out to go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). On the way I met Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him); this was a little before the Conquest of Makkah, and he was coming from the direction of Makkah. I asked: O Abu Sulayman! Where are you going? He said: By Allah! The way has become clear; that man is truly a Prophet. I am going to accept Islam; how much longer shall I delay it? Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said: By Allah! I too have come only to accept Islam. The narrator says: Then we came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) stepped forward, accepted Islam and then gave his pledge. Then I came forward and said: O Messenger of Allah! I will pledge allegiance to you on the condition that my past sins are forgiven. The narrator says: The shortcomings that would come later did not occur to me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Amr! Pledge allegiance, for Islam wipes out all the shortcomings before it, and emigration wipes out everything before it. The narrator says: So I pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and then went back. Ibn Ishaq said: A person whom I do not suspect narrated
this report to me: that Sayyiduna Uthman bin Talhah bin Abi Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam along with those two men when they accepted Islam.
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Tabarani recorded this report, but he recorded these words: Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) told me this personally, and my ears heard it. The narrators of both reports are thiqat (trustworthy).
