Reports on Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him)

Imam al-Tabarani said: This is Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him); his kunyah is Abu Sulayman. His (name and lineage is as follows:) Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) bin al-Mughirah bin Abdullah bin Umar bin Makhzum bin Yaqazah bin Murrah bin Ka'b bin Lu'ayy bin Ghalib bin Fihr bin Malik. His mother is Lubabah bint al-Harith bin Hazn bin Bujayr bin al-Huzam bin Ruwaybah bin Abdullah bin Hilal bin Amir bin Sa'sa'ah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him the name (or title) "the Sword of Allah".

Sayyiduna Wahshi bin Harb (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) appointed Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) as commander to fight the apostates, and said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The best servant of Allah, and the best member of his clan, is Khalid bin al-Walid, one of the swords of Allah, whom Allah Almighty has drawn from its sheath against the disbelievers and the hypocrites."
Imam Ahmad recorded this report, and Imam al-Tabarani recorded something similar, and the narrators of both reports are thiqat (trustworthy).

Abd al-Malik bin Umayr said: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) appointed Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) as governor of Syria, and he removed Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) from office. The narrator says: Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The one appointed as your commander is the trustworthy one of this Ummah; I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The trustworthy one of this Ummah is Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah." Then Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Khalid is one of the swords of Allah and the best member of his clan."
Imam Ahmad recorded this report, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih; however, Abd al-Malik bin Umayr did not live in the time of Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him), nor in the time of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).

Nashirah bin Sumayy al-Yazani said: On the day of "al-Jabiyah" I heard Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), while delivering a sermon, say: I wish to present my excuse to you regarding the dismissal of Khalid bin al-Walid. I had instructed him to keep this wealth reserved for the weak among the Muhajirun, but he gave this wealth to the powerful, to people of high standing and to the eloquent; so I dismissed him and appointed Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah as governor. At this, Abu Amr bin Hafs bin al-Mughirah said: O Umar bin al-Khattab! By Allah! This is no excuse. You have removed from office a governor whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed, you have sheathed a sword that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) drew from its sheath, and you have lowered a banner that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) raised. You have violated the rights of kinship and envied your cousin. Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You are related to him, you are young in age, and you are taking the side of your cousin.
Imam Ahmad recorded this report, and Imam al-Tabarani recorded something similar, and the narrators of both are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) complained to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Khalid! Do not hurt a man who took part in the Battle of Badr; even if you were to spend in charity gold equal to Mount Uhud, you would still not attain his deed. Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: They criticise me, so I answer them back. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not hurt Khalid, for he is one of the swords of Allah Almighty, which Allah Almighty has unsheathed against the disbelievers.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this report in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir, and in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir in abridged form; Imam al-Bazzar recorded something similar. The narrators of al-Tabarani are thiqat (trustworthy).

Qays bin Abi Hazim said: I was told that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not speak ill of Khalid, for he is one of the swords of Allah, which Allah Almighty has unsheathed against the disbelievers."
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded this report; he did not name the Companion, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) announced from the pulpit the martyrdom of those who were martyred in the Battle of Mu'tah, and then he said: Then one of the swords of Allah took the banner.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this report, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the news about those martyred in the Battle of Mu'tah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then one of the swords of Allah, Khalid bin al-Walid, took the banner, and Allah Almighty granted victory at his hands."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this report, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Abdullah bin Ahmad bin Hanbal, and he is an imam, thabt (firmly reliable).

Ja'far bin Abdullah bin al-Hakam said: Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) lost his cap on the day of the Battle of Yarmuk. He said: Look for it. The people could not find it. He said: Look for it. They searched and found it, and it was an old, worn cap. Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) explained: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had his head shaved on the occasion of Umrah, the people rushed to take the hair from the sides of his head, and I got ahead of them and obtained the hair from the front of his head and placed it in this cap. So whatever battle I take part in, if this cap is with me, I am granted victory.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this report, and Imam Abu Ya'la recorded something similar, and the narrators of both are the narrators of the Sahih. The narrator Ja'far heard from a group of the Companions, but I do not know whether he heard from Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) or not.

Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Ever since we accepted Islam, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not regard anyone as equal to me and Khalid bin al-Walid in matters of war.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this report in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Abu al-Safar said: Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the chief of Banu al-Marazibah at al-Hirah. The people said to him: Be careful lest the non-Arabs give you poison to drink. He said: Bring it to me. Then he took that cup in his hand and drank it; he had recited "Bismillah" (In the name of Allah), and it did him no harm.
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded this report, and Imam al-Tabarani recorded something similar. One of al-Tabarani's two chains has the narrators of the Sahih, and
this report is muttasil (connected), and the narrators of both are thiqat (trustworthy); however, the narrators Abu al-Safar and Abu Burdah bin Abi Musa did not hear from Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him). And Allah knows best.

Qays bin Abi Hazim said: Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "A night in which a bride, a woman whom I love, is brought to my house, and I am also given the good news that she will bear me a son, is not dearer to me than a harsh night in which there is a military expedition of the Muhajirun and the enemy is to be attacked the next morning."
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded this report, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Qays bin Abi Hazim said: Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Jihad in the path of Allah has kept me from doing much recitation.
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded this report, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Abu Wa'il said: When the time of death drew near for Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: I sought martyrdom, but it was not granted to me; now it is only that I shall die on my bed. And among my deeds there is no deed in which I place more trust than La ilaha illallah (none is worthy of worship except Allah); I have made it my shield. Then he said: When I die, take my weapons and my horse and give them in the path of Allah.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this report, and its chain is hasan (good).

Yunus bin Abi Ishaq said: People came to visit Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) in his illness, and someone said: He is one of those who go ahead. He said: Yes! By Allah! I will seek help in that regard.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this report; its chain is munqati' (broken), and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Numayr said: Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away around the year 21 AH.
