Zubayr bin Bakkar says: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) was born to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and his full sister is Sayyidah Hafsah bint Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and a brother, Abd al-Rahman al-Akbar. The mother of all of them was Zaynab bint Maz'un bin Habib bin Wahb bin Hudhafah bin Jumah; she was one of the women who emigrated. Before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) was married to Sayyiduna Khunays bin Hudhafah al-Sahmi (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyidah Hafsah's (may Allah be pleased with her) father (Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him), her paternal uncle Sayyiduna Zayd bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), her maternal uncles Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Qudamah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), and her maternal cousin Sayyiduna al-Sa'ib bin Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) had the honour of taking part in the Battle of Badr.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Once Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) and she was weeping. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Why are you weeping? Perhaps the Messenger of Allah has divorced you. The Messenger of Allah divorced you before as well and took you back because of me. By Allah! If he has divorced you now, I will never speak a word to you.

When the news reached Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), he put dust on his head and said: O son of al-Khattab, what regard will Allah Almighty have for you after this? Then Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) descended upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Allah Almighty commands you to take back Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), out of mercy for Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).

Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) divorced Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Take back Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), for she is a woman who fasts much and prays much, and she will be your wife in Paradise.
Al-Bazzar and at-Tabarani recorded it, but at-Tabarani's wording is: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to divorce Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), so Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) came to him and said: Do not divorce her, for she is a woman who keeps many voluntary fasts and prays much, and she will be your wife in Paradise. The chains of both contain a narrator, al-Hasan bin Abi Ja'far, who is da'if (weak).
