Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and I were companions to each other during the expedition of Dhat al-'Ushayrah. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) camped there and stayed there, we saw some people of Banu Mudlij working at a spring of theirs in a date-palm grove. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: "O Abu al-Yaqzan, would you like us to go to these people and see how they work?" So we went to them and watched their work for a while; then sleep began to overcome us, so Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and I went and lay down on the soil among the date palms and slept. By Allah! We woke only when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was moving us with his foot, and we had become covered in dust from that soil. On that day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Abu Turab!" because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had seen the dust on him. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not tell you both about the two men who are the most wretched of people?" We said: "Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The wretch of the people of Thamud who hamstrung the she-camel, and the man, O Ali, who will strike you on this spot" (the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant the forehead) "until this becomes wet from it" (the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant his beard).
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it, and al-Bazzar recorded it in abridged form. The narrators of all of them have been declared trustworthy, except that its Tabi'i did not hear from Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him).

Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) reports from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that one day he asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "Who was the most wretched of the earlier peoples?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "The one who hamstrung the she-camel, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have spoken the truth." Then he asked: "Then who will be the most wretched of the later peoples?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "I have no knowledge of that, O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who will strike you on this spot," and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this while pointing to his forehead. So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say to the people of Iraq: "I wish that the most wretched among you would come forth and dye this" (Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) meant his beard) "from here," and he said this while placing his hand on the front of his head.
Al-Tabarani and Abu Ya'la recorded it. Its chain contains Rishdin bin Sa'd, who has been declared trustworthy, and the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Fadalah bin Abi Fadalah al-Ansari narrates: I went with my father to visit Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was ill. My father said to him: "Why are you staying in this place? If you were to die here, only the Bedouins of the Juhaynah tribe would see to your shrouding and burial. If you enter the city, you will be among your companions, and if something befalls you that you fear, or that we fear for you, your companions will look after you." The narrator says: Sayyiduna Abu Fadalah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) was one of the people of Badr. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "I will not die of this illness of mine" (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) "I will not die of this ailment of mine, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told me that I will not die until" (the narrator says: I think the words in the narration are:) "I am struck and this is dyed by that." The narrator says: Sayyiduna Abu Fadalah (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred at the Battle of Siffin while fighting alongside Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and Ahmad recorded something similar; its narrators have been declared trustworthy.

Abu Sinan al-Du'ali narrates that he went to visit Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) during an illness of his, and he said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "We are anxious about you on account of this illness of yours." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "But by Allah! I have no fear for myself on account of this illness, because I heard the Truthful, the Confirmed in truth (peace and blessings be upon him), saying: 'You will be struck a blow here, and struck a blow here.'" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) pointed to his temple, indicating that blood would flow from here and dye your beard. "And the one who does this will be the most wretched of people, just as the one who hamstrung the she-camel was the most wretched of the people of Thamud."

Abu Sinan Yazid bin Murrah al-Dili narrates: Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) fell severely ill, so much so that he remained ill for a long time, and we became anxious about him. Then he became well and recovered, so we said: "O Abu al-Hasan! Congratulations to you! All praise belongs to Allah Almighty, who has granted you well-being; we had begun to fear for you." He said: "But I had no fear for myself. The Truthful, the Confirmed in truth (peace and blessings be upon him), told me that I will not die until I am struck here" (Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said this while pointing to the front left side of his head) "and this spot is dyed with blood from it" (Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said this while taking hold of his beard). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had said: "You will be killed by the one who will be the most wretched of this Ummah, just as the one who hamstrung the she-camel of Allah was the most wretched of Banu so-and-so of the people of Thamud." The narrator says: So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) attributed him to a sub-branch of the people of Thamud.
Abu Ya'la recorded it. Its chain contains the father of Ali bin al-Madini, who is da'if (weak).

Abdullah bin Subay' narrates: I heard Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: "This will be dyed by that, and only the most wretched person is waiting for me." The people said: "O Commander of the Faithful! Tell us about him, and we will wipe out his very lineage." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "In that case you would be killing someone other than my killer." The people said: "Appoint someone as your deputy over us." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "No; rather, I will leave you in the same state in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left you." The people asked: "When you go into the presence of your Lord, what will you say in the presence of your Lord?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will say: 'O Allah! You let me remain among them for as long as You saw fit; then You took me to Yourself, but You are among them. If You will, keep them upright, and if You will, let them be ruined.'"
Ahmad and Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except Abdullah bin Subay', who is thiqah (trustworthy).
Al-Bazzar recorded it with a hasan (good) chain.
