Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) reports from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that one day he asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "Who was the most wretched of the earlier peoples?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "The one who hamstrung the she-camel, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have spoken the truth." Then he asked: "Then who will be the most wretched of the later peoples?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "I have no knowledge of that, O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who will strike you on this spot," and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this while pointing to his forehead. So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say to the people of Iraq: "I wish that the most wretched among you would come forth and dye this" (Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) meant his beard) "from here," and he said this while placing his hand on the front of his head.
Al-Tabarani and Abu Ya'la recorded it. Its chain contains Rishdin bin Sa'd, who has been declared trustworthy, and the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
