Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) states regarding (the words of Allah Almighty): "And your movement among those who prostrate": Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept passing from the loins of one prophet to another prophet, until he became a prophet.
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "My birth came about through marriage. From Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him) onwards, I was never (passed on to the next generation) through fornication, until I was born to my father and mother."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Muhammad bin Ja'far bin Muhammad bin Ali, whose hadith Imam al-Hakim (may Allah have mercy on him) declared sahih in al-Mustadrak, though he has been criticised; the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Nothing of the fornication of the Age of Ignorance had any part in my birth; I was born only through marriage, like the marriage of Islam."
Al-Tabarani recorded it from al-Madini from Abu al-Huwayrith, and I know neither al-Madini nor his teacher; the rest of its narrators have been declared trustworthy.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty divided creation into two parts and placed me in the better of the two. This is what is meant by the words of Allah Almighty: 'The people of the right' and 'the people of the left.' So I am among the people of the right, and I am the best of the people of the right. Then Allah Almighty divided the two parts into houses, and placed me in the best house among them. This is what is meant by the words of Allah Almighty: 'The people of the right, what are the people of the right? And the people of the left, what are the people of the left? And the foremost, the foremost.' So I am among the best of the foremost. Then Allah Almighty divided the houses into tribes and placed me in the best tribe. This is what is meant by the words of Allah Almighty: 'Nations and tribes.' So I am the most God-fearing of the children of Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him) and the most honoured of them in the sight of Allah Almighty, and I do not say this out of pride. Then Allah Almighty divided the tribes into households and placed me in the best household among them. This is what is meant by the words of Allah Almighty: 'O People of the House, Allah Almighty intends only to remove impurity from you and to purify you thoroughly.'"
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Yahya bin Abd al-Hamid al-Himmani and Abayah bin Rib'i, and both of them are da'if (weak).
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) states: We were sitting in the courtyard of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a woman passed by. One of those present said: "This is the daughter of Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then a man among those present said: "The example of Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) among Banu Hashim is like that of a sweet basil (rayhanah) plant in the midst of filth." The woman went and told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came, and signs of anger were evident on his (peace and blessings be upon him) face. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood before those people and said: "What is the matter with these sayings that have reached me from some people? Indeed, Allah Almighty created seven heavens and chose the uppermost of them, then He settled in those heavens whomever He willed of His creation. He created seven earths and chose the uppermost (earth), and settled in it whomever of His creation He willed. He created creation, and from all creation He chose the children of Adam; from the children of Adam He chose the Arabs; from the Arabs He chose the tribe of Mudar; from Mudar He chose Quraysh; from Quraysh He chose Banu Hashim; and from Banu Hashim He chose me. So I have passed from the best of people to the best of people. Whoever loves the Arabs will love them because of his love for me, and whoever hates the Arabs will hate them because of his hatred for me."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, but he transmitted these words: "Whoever loves the Arabs loves them out of love for me, and whoever hates the Arabs hates them out of hatred for me." Its chain contains Hammad bin Waqid, who is da'if (weak), but his narration is taken into consideration; the rest of its narrators have been declared trustworthy.
Abd al-Muttalib bin Rabi'ah bin al-Harith bin Abd al-Muttalib states: Some people from the Ansar came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "We have heard people of your tribe talking, to the point that one of them said: 'The example of Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is like a date palm that grows in a rubbish heap.'" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people, who am I?" The people said: "You are the Messenger of Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abd al-Muttalib." The narrator says: We had never heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) state his lineage like this before. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Behold! Allah Almighty created His creation, then divided that creation into two groups and placed me in the better of the two groups. Then He divided them into tribes and placed me in the best tribe among them. Then He divided them into households and placed me in the best household among them. So I am the best of them all in household, and the best of them all in person." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Al-Tirmidhi recorded a different narration from this person.
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The likeness of me and of my household is like that of a date palm that grows in a rubbish heap."
At-Tabarani recorded it, and it is munkar (denounced). It appears that it is a saying of Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him), if it is authentically reported from him, because its chain contains Ibn Lahi'ah and a narrator whom I do not know.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Quraysh said: "The likeness of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is that of a date palm that grows in a filthy place."
Al-Bazzar recorded it with a hasan (good) chain, and this is what is presumed of it.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: A son of Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), the paternal aunt of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), passed away. She began to weep over him and cry out. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to her and said: "O aunt, why are you weeping?" She said: "My son has passed away." He said: "O aunt, whoever has a child die in Islam and he is patient, Allah Almighty builds a house for him in Paradise." So she fell silent. Then she left the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and met Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: "O Safiyyah, I heard the sound of your crying. Your kinship with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will not avail you anything before Allah Almighty." At this Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) began to weep. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard her weeping, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to honour her greatly and love her, he said: "O aunt, I told you what I told you, and yet you are weeping?" Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "O Messenger of Allah, that is not why I am weeping. Umar bin al-Khattab met me and said: 'Your kinship with the Messenger of Allah will not avail you anything before Allah.'" The narrator said: He became angry and said: "O Bilal, announce that the people should gather." Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) announced it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit. He praised and glorified Allah Almighty and then said: "What is the matter with people who claim that my kinship will not benefit? Every tie and lineage will be cut off on the Day of Resurrection except my tie and my lineage, for they will remain joined in this world and the Hereafter." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It was for this reason that I married Umm Kulthum, the daughter of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), because I heard this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that day, and I wished that I too would have a tie of kinship with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator said: Then I left the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and passed by some men of Quraysh. They were boasting to one another and mentioning the affairs of the Age of Ignorance. I said: "The Messenger of Allah is from among us." They said: "Sometimes a tree grows even in a rubbish heap." The narrator said: I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him about this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Bilal, tell the people to gather." After praising and glorifying Allah Almighty, he said: "Who am I?" The people said: "You are the Messenger of Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "State my lineage." The people said: "You are Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abd al-Muttalib." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, I am Muhammad bin Abdullah, and I am also the Messenger of Allah. What is the matter with people who belittle my origin? By Allah, I am the most excellent of them all in origin and the best of them all in standing." The narrator said: When the Ansar heard about this, they said: "Rise and take up your weapons, for the Messenger of Allah has been angered." The narrator said: They took up their weapons and then came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Their crowd was very large; they surrounded the people, and their number was so great that the doors of the mosque and the streets were filled with them. Then they stood before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, whichever person you command us concerning, we will wipe out his descendants." When the men of Quraysh saw this situation, they rose, came before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and offered him their apologies. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Other people are the outer garment, and the Ansar are the garment that touches the body." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praised them and spoke well of them.
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Isma'il bin Yahya bin Salamah bin Kuhayl, who is matruk (abandoned).
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Allah Almighty created the creation, He sent Jibril, and he divided the people into two parts. He made the Arabs one part and the non-Arabs one part, and the choice (or selection) bestowed by Allah Almighty is among the Arabs. Then He divided the Arabs into two parts: He made Yemen one part and Mudar one part, and Quraysh one part, and the choice bestowed by Allah Almighty is in Quraysh. Then He brought me forth from the best (family) of those to whom I belong."
At-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator whom I do not know.
Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) said: "I searched through the eastern and western parts of the earth, but I did not see any man more excellent than Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), nor did I see any household more excellent than the household of Banu Hashim."
At-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Musa bin Ubaydah al-Rabadhi, who is da'if (weak).
Sayyiduna Khuraym bin Aws bin Harithah bin Lam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when Sayyiduna al-Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "O Messenger of Allah, I wish to praise you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Present it; may Allah not close your mouth." So he began to recite these verses: "Before this you were pure in the shades, and in the place of trust where bodies were covered with leaves. Then you descended to the lands, being at that time neither a human, nor a lump of flesh, nor a clot of blood, but a drop of seed. (In that state) you rode the Ark (of Sayyiduna Nuh, peace be upon him), when drowning had bridled 'Nasr' (the idol of the people of Nuh) and its followers. You were transferred from the loins (of your male forefathers) to the wombs (of the women); whenever one world (that is, one generation) passed away, another layer appeared, until your nobility found its place in the lofty rank of the family of 'Khindif'. When you were born, the earth shone because of your light and the horizon gleamed; so in the radiance of that light and brightness we travel the paths of guidance."
At-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains narrators whom I do not know.
Maymun narrates: I asked Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him): "What was the name of the mother of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said: "Sayyidah Aminah bint Wahb (may Allah be pleased with her)."
At-Tabarani recorded it, and this is something that does not require a chain.
Sayyiduna Abu Umamah al-Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When the descendants of Ma'add bin Adnan reached forty men, they attacked the army of Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) and plundered its goods. Sayyiduna Musa bin Imran (peace be upon him) supplicated against them and said: 'O my Lord, these are the descendants of Ma'add who have raided my army.' Allah Almighty revealed to him: 'O Musa bin Imran, do not supplicate against them, for from among them will come the unlettered Prophet, the warner and bringer of glad tidings, and from among them will come a nation upon whom mercy has been bestowed, and that is the nation of Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). They will be people who are content with a little provision from Allah Almighty, and Allah Almighty will be pleased with a little deed from them. Allah Almighty will admit them into Paradise because of their saying La ilaha illallah (there is no god but Allah). Their Prophet will be Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abd al-Muttalib, humble in his outward bearing, with wisdom gathered for him in his silence. He will speak with wisdom and act with forbearance. I will bring him forth from the best family of his nation, Quraysh, and then I will bring him forth from Banu Hashim, the chosen family of Quraysh. So they will keep moving from one good to another, and his nation too will keep moving towards good.'"
At-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Jasr bin Farqad, who is da'if (weak).
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am the Prophet, this is no lie; and I am the son of Abd al-Muttalib. I am the most eloquent of the Arabs. I was born among Banu Quraysh and I was raised among Banu Sa'd bin Bakr, so how could any faulty speech (lahn) come to me?"
At-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Mubashshir bin Ubayd, who is matruk (abandoned).
Sayyiduna al-Jafshish al-Kindi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Some people of the tribe of Kindah came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "You are from us." They claimed kinship with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We do not attribute ourselves to our mother, nor do we disown our father. We are the descendants of al-Nadr bin Kinanah."
In one narration the words are: Sayyiduna al-Jafshish (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and after this the narrator narrated the hadith as before.
At-Tabarani recorded it, and its chain contains a narrator whom I do not know.
Sayyiduna Siyabah bin Asim al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that on the day of the Battle of Hunayn the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am the son of the women named 'Atikah'."
At-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
Sayyidah Ruqayqah bint Abi Sayfi bin Hashim (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates (she was of the same age as Abd al-Muttalib). She narrates: Successive years came upon Quraysh that dried up the udders and weakened the bones. Once, while I was lying down in a state of distress, a caller suddenly called out, saying: "O company of Quraysh, the time of this Prophet who is to be sent has begun to come upon you, and this is the time of his appearance. So be ready for rain and plenty! Beware! Look for a man from among you who has a full body, whose colour is white and whose skin is beautiful, who has such forbearance that he restrains his anger, and such a way that people are guided to it. Let him and his children come forward, and let one man from every branch of Quraysh be with him. Let them bathe, apply perfume and touch the Rukn, and then let them climb Mount Abu Qubays; then let that man supplicate and the rest of the people say Amin, and you will be given as much rain as you wish." She narrates: Allah knows that when I woke up the next morning I was alarmed, my skin was trembling and my mind was dazed. I related my dream, and it soon spread through the streets of Makkah. By the sanctity and the Sanctuary, every person of al-Abtah said the same thing: "The one meant by this must be Shaybat al-Hamd (that is, Abd al-Muttalib)." The men of Quraysh came to him, one person from each clan came to him; they bathed, applied perfume and touched the Black Stone, and then they climbed Mount Abu Qubays, and the people formed rows around him. When they reached the summit of the mountain, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was with Abd al-Muttalib, a young boy at the time. Abd al-Muttalib raised his hands and said: "O Allah, the One who fills the need and removes distress, You are the Knower who needs no one to inform Him, You are the One who is asked and You are not stingy. These are Your male servants and Your female servants who live in the vicinity of Your Sanctuary. They are telling You of their distress because of this drought that has befallen them, as a result of which the animals keep dying. O Allah, send down upon us rain that quenches." The narrator said: By the Lord of the Ka'bah, they had not yet gone back when rain began to fall from the sky and water began to flow in the low-lying valley. I heard some people of Quraysh, among them Abdullah bin Jud'an, Harb bin Umayyah and Hisham bin al-Mughirah, saying to Abd al-Muttalib: "Congratulations to you, O Abu al-Batha'!" meaning that because of you the people of al-Batha' have been granted life. Concerning this, Sayyidah Ruqayqah bint Abi Sayfi (may Allah be pleased with her) composed these verses: "Through Shaybat al-Hamd, Allah Almighty gave our town rain to drink. Before, we found life absent, but then abundant rain began; the water came and made channels in the low-lying land, which gave life to the animals and the trees. This is a favour from Allah Almighty, whose coming is blessed, and the best glad tidings ever given (to the people of the tribe of) Mudar. He is blessed in his affair; rain was sought through him. Among all creation there is none equal to him, nor can (such a thing) be imagined (of anyone)."
At-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains narrators whom I do not know.
