It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Settle matters of the hadd punishments among yourselves as long as the matter has not been brought before the rulers. Once it is brought before the rulers, then the ruler will judge between the people according to the Book of Allah."
Abu Ya'la recorded it. Its chain contains al-Abbas bin al-Fadl al-Ansari, who is da'if (weak).

Muhammad bin Yazid bin Rukanah says that his maternal aunt, the sister of Mas'ud bin al-Ajma', narrated this hadith to him: her father made a request to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning the Makhzumi woman who had stolen a blanket, requesting: "We will give forty uqiyyah as a ransom for her." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you let her be purified, that is better for her." Then, by the order of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that woman's hand was cut off. She was from Banu Abd al-Ashhal, or perhaps from Banu Asad.
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Ibn Majah recorded this narration from this woman, from her father, while here it is narrated from the woman herself; and Allah knows best.
Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains Muhammad bin Ishaq, who is a mudallis.

Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: Quraysh became troubled over the matter of the Makhzumi woman who had stolen. The people said: "Who will speak to the Messenger of Allah about this woman?" The people spoke to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The people before you were destroyed only because when a person of standing among them stole, they would leave him, and when a weak person stole, they would carry out the hadd punishment on him. By Allah, if Fatimah bint Muhammad had (done this), I would have had her hand cut off too."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and he says: From Umar bin Qays al-Masir,
no one narrated it except Amr bin Abi Qays al-Razi. The students of al-Zuhri differed from him, stating that it is narrated from al-Zuhri, from Urwah, from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her).
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The narrators of al-Tabarani are thiqat (trustworthy).

Urwah bin al-Zubayr reports this statement from his father: Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) met a thief and interceded for him. It was said to him: "(Wait) until we take him to the ruler." He said: "When the matter reaches the ruler, then may Allah curse the one who intercedes and the one to whom the intercession is made (or the one for whom it is made)", just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Saghir. Its chain contains Abu Ghaziyyah Muhammad bin Musa al-Ansari, whom Abu Hatim and others declared da'if (weak), while al-Hakim (may Allah have mercy on him) declared him thiqah (trustworthy); and it contains Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad, who is da'if (weak).

Abu Matar says: I saw Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when a man was brought to him. The people said: "He has stolen a camel." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I do not think that you stole?" He said: "Yes (I did steal)." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Perhaps you were mistaken about something." He said: "No! I did steal." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Qanbar! Take him, tie his fingers, light a fire and call the butcher to cut it off; then wait until I come to you." When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came, he asked him: "Did you steal?" He said: "No." So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) let him go. The people said to him: "O Commander of the Believers! Why have you let him go, when he had confessed before you?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I seized him on the basis of his own words, and I have let him go on the basis of his own words." Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) related that a man who had stolen was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He ordered his hand to be cut off, and then he wept. It was said: "O Messenger of Allah! Why are you weeping?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How can I not weep, when a member of my Ummah is having (his hand) cut off in your midst?" The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! Why did you not pardon him?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That would be an evil ruler who pardons in matters of the hadd punishments; but you should pardon one another among yourselves."
Abu Ya'la recorded it. I do not know the narrator Abu Matar, nor do I know the person who narrates from him.
