Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I have preserved for you six things from the Messenger of Allah: "Divorce takes place only after marriage; freeing a slave takes place only after ownership; fulfilling a vow concerning disobedience is not binding; there is no orphanhood after reaching puberty; remaining silent until nightfall (that is, a fast of silence) has no standing; and while fasting, the continuous fast (sawm al-wisal) is not to be kept." (Allamah Haythami says:) I say: Abu Dawud recorded from it only this part: there is no orphanhood after reaching puberty, and remaining silent until nightfall has no standing.
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy). Hadiths of this kind have already passed in the chapters on freeing slaves and on vows.
