عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ : " لَا طَلَاقَ إِلَّا بَعْدَ نِكَاحٍ ، وَلَا عَتَاقَ إِلَّا مِنْ بَعْدِ مِلْكٍ " .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ ، وَهَذَا لَفْظُهُ ، وَالْبَزَّارُ بِنَحْوِهِ ، وَرِجَالُ الْبَزَّارِ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Divorce takes place only after marriage, and freeing a slave takes place only after ownership."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and these are his words; Bazzar recorded a similar report, and the narrators of Bazzar are the narrators of the Sahih.
