Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When this verse was revealed: "Those who accuse chaste women and then do not bring four witnesses," Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If I see a man, am I to wait until I first bring four witnesses?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Yes." He said: "No, by the One who sent you with the truth! If I see such a man, I will kill him with the sword." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O company of the Ansar! See what your chief is saying! Sa'd is protectively jealous, and I am more protectively jealous than him, and Allah Almighty is even more protectively jealous than me."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When this verse was revealed: "Those who accuse chaste women and then do not bring four witnesses, flog them eighty lashes and never accept their testimony," Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the chief of the Ansar, said: "O Messenger of Allah! Is this how it was revealed?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O company of the Ansar! Do you not hear what your chief is saying?" The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! Do not blame him; he is a protectively jealous man. By Allah! He has only ever married a virgin, and whenever he divorced a wife, none of us dared to marry that woman, because of the intensity of his temperament." Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! I know that this is the truth and that it is from Allah Almighty, but I am astonished that if I find a man who has got between a woman's thighs, I would have no right to attack him or even stir him until I bring four witnesses. By Allah! By the time I bring the four witnesses, he will have fulfilled his need." After that, the narrator mentioned the complete hadith.
Ahmad recorded it, and Abu Ya'la recorded it as a longer report; I will mention it in the chapter on li'an, if Allah wills. This report revolves around Abbad bin Mansur, who is da'if (weak).

Amr bin Shurahbil bin Amr bin Sa'id bin Sa'd bin Ubadah narrates from his father, from his grandfather: Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) was once present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: "O Messenger of Allah! If I find a man on my wife's belly, shall I strike him with my sword?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What evidence could be clearer than the sword?" The narrator says: Then he went back on his statement and said: "The Book of Allah (is to be acted upon) and witnesses (are to be produced)." Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! What evidence could be clearer than the sword?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Book of Allah (is to be acted upon) and witnesses (are to be produced). O company of the Ansar! This is your chief; anger has overtaken him, to the point that he wants to go against (the ruling of) the Book of Allah." The narrator says: A man said: "O Messenger of Allah! Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) is sharp-tempered; whenever he divorced a woman, none of us could marry that woman because of his sharp temper." The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sa'd is protectively jealous, and I am more protectively jealous than him, and Allah Almighty is even more protectively jealous than me." Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A Coptic man used to come and go frequently to Umm Ibrahim, Sayyidah Mariyah; he was her cousin, and he used to come to visit her. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "Take this sword and go, and if you find that man with that woman, kill him." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Regarding this command of yours, I have become like a heated iron; nothing will turn me back until I carry out the command you have given me. Or is it that the one present sees what the absent one does not see (that is, may I also decide at my own discretion)?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, the one present sees what the absent one does not see (that is, you may also decide at your own discretion)." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I set out carrying the sword. I found that man with that woman, and I drew the sword. When he saw me coming towards him, he realised what I intended. He went to a tree and climbed it, then he jumped from it and fell on the back of his neck; his legs spread apart, and he turned out to be a man who had no private parts, neither little nor much. I put the sword back in its sheath, then I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him about it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "All praise belongs to Allah Almighty alone, who has turned this away from us, the People of the House (Ahl al-Bayt)."
Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Ishaq, who is a mudallis (one who conceals defects in the chain) but he is thiqah (trustworthy). The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy). Diya' al-Maqdisi recorded it in al-Ahadith al-Mukhtarah.

Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Protective jealousy is of two kinds: one of them Allah Almighty loves, and the other Allah Almighty dislikes. The jealousy that concerns 'ribah' (suspicion) (meaning that a man shows anger over something unlawful), Allah Almighty loves; and the jealousy that does not concern 'ribah' (meaning that a man shows anger over something lawful), Allah Almighty dislikes. And pride is of two kinds: one of them Allah Almighty loves, and the other Allah Almighty dislikes. When a person gives charity, Allah Almighty loves it; and the pride that takes the form of arrogance, Allah Almighty dislikes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: "Three kinds of people have their supplication answered: the traveller, the father, and the (person who is) wronged."
Ahmad and Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
