It is reported about Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that he attended the wedding of a man from the Ansar together with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered the marriage sermon and married off the Ansari, then he supplicated: "With harmony, with goodness, and with a blessed omen." (Then he said:) "Beat the daff over your companion's head." So they beat the daff over his head. Then baskets came containing fruit and sugar, and these were scattered over the people, but the people held back and did not scramble for them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How fine forbearance is! But why do you not scramble for them?" They said: "O Messenger of Allah! You forbade us from snatching on such-and-such a day." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I only forbade you from snatching (plunder) in armies; I did not forbid you from scrambling at wedding feasts. So go ahead and scramble!" Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) says: By Allah! I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) pulling him and pulling us towards that scramble.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it similarly in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, but there his words are: "With goodness, with blessing, with harmony, with a blessed omen, and with abundance in provision; may Allah bless you." The chain of al-Mu'jam al-Awsat contains a narrator, Bishr bin Ibrahim, who is a fabricator of hadith. The chain of al-Mu'jam al-Kabir contains a narrator, Hazim, the freed slave of Banu Hashim, who narrates from Limazah. I have not found anyone who has given the biographies of these two. This narrator Limazah narrates from Thawr bin Yazid and is from a later period; he is not Ibn Zabbar, because that one narrates from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and people like him. The rest of the narrators of al-Mu'jam al-Kabir are thiqat (trustworthy).
