Sayyiduna Amr bin al-Qari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came; he had left Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) behind sick. This was when he had gone to Hunayn. When he came from al-Ji'ranah to perform Umrah, he visited Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), who was extremely ill. He said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have wealth, and I have no children (to inherit from me). Shall I make a will for all my wealth, or give it in charity?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." He said: "Shall I make a will for two thirds?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." He said: "Shall I make a will for half?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." He said: "Shall I make a will for one third?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, but even that is a lot." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, will I die in the land from which I went out as an emigrant?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I hope that Allah Almighty will raise you up (i.e. grant you more life), and through you He will humiliate some people and benefit others. O Amr bin al-Qari! If Sa'd dies here after me, then bury him (here)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed with his blessed hand in this way towards the road to Madinah, saying that he should be buried here.
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it, but he reported these words: "On the day of the Conquest of Makkah the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) visited Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was in Makkah; this was after he had gone to Hunayn, returned to al-Ji'ranah and distributed the spoils. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed tawaf of the House and the sa'i between Safa and Marwah." After this the narrator reported the hadith as before. Its chain contains Iyad bin Amr al-Qari; no one has criticised him and no one has declared him trustworthy.
