Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) observed a continuous fast (sawm al-wisal) joining two days and a night. Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) came and said: Indeed, Allah Almighty has accepted your continuous fast, but it is not lawful for anyone after you. The reason for this is that Allah Almighty has said: "Then complete the fast until the night." So after the night has come, there is no fast. And Jibril ordered me to offer the witr prayer after (the onset of) Fajr (true dawn).
