Qunut

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not recite the qunut supplication in any of the prayers; he only recited it in the Witr. When he was engaged in war, he would recite the qunut of calamity (qunut nazilah) in all the prayers, in which he would supplicate against the polytheists. (Sayyiduna Abdullah narrates:) Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Sayyiduna Umar and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) did not recite the qunut of calamity until they died. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) also did not recite the qunut of calamity until, when he fought the people of Syria, he would recite the qunut of calamity in all the prayers, while Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah would supplicate against him; each of the two would supplicate against the other.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. A portion has been inserted into it that belongs to someone other than Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and this is certain: that portion is the part about Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah reciting the qunut of calamity during their war, because Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away in the time of Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him). The chain of this narration contains a narrator, Muhammad bin Jabir al-Yamami, who is saduq (truthful); however, he was blind, his hadith became confused for him, and he used to be prompted.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the qunut of calamity for one month, in which he kept supplicating against the tribes of Usayyah and Dhakwan. When he gained victory over them, he stopped reciting the qunut of calamity.
Imam Abu Ya'la, Imam al-Bazzar and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Abu Hamzah al-A'war al-Qassab, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar says: Do you think that your standing after finishing the recitation of the surah is the qunut? By Allah, this is an innovation (bid'ah). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do this; he did it only for one month and then abandoned it. Do you people think that your raising your hands during the prayer (is correct)? By Allah, this is an innovation. The Messenger of Allah did not do more than this. Then he raised both his hands up to his shoulders.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Bishr bin Harb, whom Imam Ahmad, Yahya bin Ma'in, Abu Zur'ah, Abu Hatim and Imam al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) declared da'if (weak), while Ayyub and Ibn Adi declared him thiqah (trustworthy).

Abu Mijlaz narrates: I prayed behind Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, and he did not recite the qunut of calamity. I asked: "What kept you from reciting the qunut?" He replied: "I do not remember this from any of my companions (that any of them did so)."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

It is reported about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he did not recite the qunut of calamity in the Fajr prayer, and when he recited the qunut in the Witr, he recited it before going into bowing.

It is reported from him: The narrator says: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) did not recite the qunut of calamity in any prayer; only in the Witr, before bowing, (did he recite the qunut supplication). Imam al-Tabarani recorded both these narrations in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and the chains of both are hasan (good).

It is reported about Sayyiduna Abdullah: After finishing the recitation he would say the takbir, (then recite the qunut supplication), and after finishing the qunut he would again say the takbir and go into bowing.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Layth bin Abi Sulaym, who is thiqah (trustworthy), but he is a mudallis (one who conceals defects in the chain).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the qunut of calamity in the Fajr prayer, in which he supplicated against one people and supplicated in favour of another people.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Abd al-Malik bin Abi Bakr narrates: Sayyiduna Ayyash bin Abi Rabi'ah, Sayyiduna Salamah bin Hisham and Sayyiduna al-Walid bin al-Walid bin al-Mughirah fled from the polytheists and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Ayyash and Sayyiduna Salamah were riding one behind the other on a camel, and Sayyiduna al-Walid was driving the two of them along. Al-Walid's finger was wounded, so he said: "You are but a finger that has bled, and what you have met with was in the path of Allah Almighty." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to know of their setting out towards him and of their situation before we did. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed the Fajr prayer. He performed the first rak'ah, and when he raised his head from bowing, before going into prostration he supplicated for them: "O Allah, rescue Ayyash bin Abi Rabi'ah; O Allah, rescue Salamah bin Hisham; O Allah, rescue al-Walid bin al-Walid; O Allah, rescue the weak among the believers; O Allah, make Your grip severe upon the tribe of Mudar, and decree for them years of famine like those in the time of Sayyiduna Yusuf (peace be upon him)."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir.
This narration is mursal and sahih (authentic); its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Khufaf bin Ima' bin Rahadah al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in the Fajr prayer. When he raised his head (from the bowing) of the last rak'ah, he made this supplication: "O Allah, curse the tribes of Lihyan, Ri'l, Dhakwan and Usayyah, who have disobeyed Allah and His Messenger. May Allah Almighty keep the tribe of Aslam safe, and may Allah Almighty forgive the tribe of Ghifar." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went into prostration. When he completed the prayer, he turned towards the people and said: "O people, I did not say this (of my own accord); rather, Allah Almighty said it." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
This narration is mentioned in the Sahih, but without this part: "When he completed the prayer"; the part from there to the end is not in it.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Ishaq, who is thiqah (trustworthy), but he is a mudallis (one who conceals defects in the chain); the remaining narrators of this narration are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Whatever obligatory prayer the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed, he would recite the qunut of calamity in it.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I recite the qunut of calamity only so that you may supplicate to your Lord and ask Him for your needs."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its chain is hasan (good).

Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say in his supplication: "O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided; grant me well-being among those to whom You have granted well-being; take me into Your care along with those whom You have taken into Your care; bless me in what You have given; and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed. For You decree, and no decree is passed against You, and the one whom You befriend is never humiliated. Blessed are You, our Lord, and Exalted."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and said: No one narrated it from Alqamah except a narrator named Abu Hafs Umar. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: I have not found anyone who has given an account of him.

Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade reciting the qunut of calamity in the Isha prayer.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Anbasah bin Abd al-Rahman, who is matruk (abandoned).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would pray the Witr as three rak'ahs, and he would recite the qunut supplication before bowing.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Sahl bin al-Abbas al-Tirmidhi. Imam al-Daraqutni (may Allah have mercy on him) says: He is not thiqah (trustworthy). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The hadith of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) in which the qunut is mentioned will come later, in the chapter on the virtues of Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) or of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), if Allah wills; and the hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) will come in the chapter on supplications, under a person's supplicating for his brother in his absence, if Allah wills.

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the qunut of calamity in the Fajr prayer after bowing. The narrator says: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicating against the disbelievers in the qunut of calamity, and I heard him say: "O Allah, make their hearts like the hearts of disbelieving women."
Abu Ya'la and Imam al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Hanzalah bin Ubaydullah al-Sadusi, whom Imam Ahmad, Ibn al-Madini and a group declared da'if (weak). Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continued to recite the qunut of calamity in the Fajr prayer until he departed from this world.
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and Imam al-Bazzar recorded a similar narration; its narrators have been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept reciting the qunut of calamity until he passed away; Sayyiduna Abu Bakr also kept reciting it until he died, and Sayyiduna Umar also kept reciting it until he died.
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the polytheists during the prayer, he would first mention Quraysh and then, after them, mention many tribes of the Arabs. It was said to him: "Curse the disbelievers of Quraysh." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began, whenever he intended to curse a tribe, to say: "O Allah, curse the disbelievers of Banu so-and-so."
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Yusuf bin Khalid al-Samti, who is da'if (weak).
