Reports on the siwak

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Were it not that I would put my Ummah to hardship, I would have ordered them to use the tooth-stick (siwak) at every prayer." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) is in the Sahih. Abdullah recorded this narration among his additions to the Musnad of Ahmad, and al-Bazzar recorded only the hadith of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and in this narration, after the words "at every prayer", he added: "and I would have delayed the Isha prayer until a third of the night. When the first third of the night has passed, Allah Almighty descends to the lowest heaven and remains there continuously until true dawn breaks, saying: 'Is there anyone asking, that he may be given? Is there anyone supplicating, that his supplication may be answered? Is there anyone seeking intercession, that his intercession may be accepted? Is there anyone repenting and seeking forgiveness, that he may be forgiven?'"
The narrators of this narration are thiqat (trustworthy), but in the Musnad it is reported from Abu Ishaq from Ubaydullah bin Abi Rafi' as a mu'an'an narration (using "from"). Al-Bazzar recorded it from Ibn Ishaq, who says: Abd al-Rahman bin Yasar narrated this hadith to me from Ubaydullah bin Abi Rafi'. Yahya bin Ma'in declared Abd al-Rahman thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyidah Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Were it not that I feared putting my Ummah to hardship, I would have ordered them to use the tooth-stick (siwak) at every prayer."
Ahmad and Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyidah Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Were it not that I feared putting my Ummah to hardship, I would have ordered them to use the tooth-stick (siwak) at every prayer, just as they perform ablution (at every prayer)."
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

From one of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported: "Were it not that I feared putting my Ummah to hardship, I would have ordered them to use the tooth-stick (siwak) with every prayer."
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to order the use of the tooth-stick (siwak).
Al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani (in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir) recorded it, and its chain contains a narrator who has not been named.

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Were it not that I feared putting my Ummah to hardship, I would have ordered them to use the tooth-stick (siwak) at every prayer."
Al-Bazzar recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Mu'awiyah bin Yahya al-Sadafi, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Were it not that I feared you would be unable to do it, I would have ordered you to use the tooth-stick (siwak) with every prayer."
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir through Muslim bin Kaysan al-Mula'i, who is da'if (weak); al-Bazzar said: There is no harm in him.

Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: People came into the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) without having used the tooth-stick (miswak). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have come to me without using the miswak. Use the miswak. Were it not that I feared putting my Ummah to hardship, I would have made using the miswak with every prayer obligatory for them, just as I have made ablution obligatory for them."
Al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani (in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir) recorded it, and Abu Ya'la recorded something similar, adding these words at its end: "Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept mentioning the miswak until we feared that Qur'an would be revealed about it." Its chain contains a narrator, Abu Ali al-Sayqal; Ibn al-Sakan and others said: He is majhul (unknown).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Were it not that I feared putting my Ummah to hardship, I would have commanded them to use the miswak at the time of every prayer."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Sa'id bin Rashid, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Were it not for the concern that it would become a sunnah, I would have commanded the use of the miswak at the time of every prayer."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Artah Abu Hatim, and I have not found anyone who mentions him. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: We used to place the miswak of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) together with his water for purification. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, you never leave the miswak!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes. If it were possible for me to use the miswak after every two rak'ahs, I would do that too."
Abu Ya'la recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, al-Sari bin Isma'il, who is matruk (abandoned).

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her), the honoured wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Praying with the miswak has a seventy-fold excellence over praying without the miswak."
Ahmad, al-Bazzar and Abu Ya'la recorded it, and al-Hakim (may Allah have mercy on him) declared it sahih (authentic).

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Praying two rak'ahs with the miswak is more excellent than seventy rak'ahs without the miswak."
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "I was commanded to use the miswak until I thought that Qur'an would be revealed to me about it (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) that revelation would be sent down."
Abu Ya'la recorded it.

Imam Ahmad recorded this report from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both); he narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I was commanded to use the miswak until I feared that revelation would be sent to me about it."
Its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat with these words: "I was commanded to use the miswak until I feared for my teeth." Its chain contains a narrator, Ata bin al-Sa'ib.
Al-Tabarani also recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its chain also contains Ata bin al-Sa'ib.

Sayyiduna Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I was commanded to use the miswak until I feared that it would be made obligatory upon me."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani (in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir) recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Layth bin Abi Sulaym, who is thiqah (trustworthy) but a mudallis (one who conceals his source), and he narrated it with 'an'anah (using "from").

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) slept, the miswak was with him, and when he woke up, the first thing he did was use the miswak.
Ahmad and Abu Ya'la recorded it. Some of its routes have these words: "In whatever part of the night the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up, he would use the miswak." Al-Tabarani recorded it likewise in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain is da'if (weak); some of its routes contain a narrator who is not named, some contain a narrator named Husam bin Missak, and there are other narrators as well.

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I was commanded to use the miswak until I feared that I would lose my teeth (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) until I feared for my gums and my teeth."
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Imran bin Khalid, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Jibril instructed me to use the miswak until I thought that I would lose my teeth."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Ubaydullah bin Waqid, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Jibril kept urging me to use the miswak until I feared for my molars."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its narrators have been declared trustworthy, though there is disagreement about some of them.

It is reported about Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he commanded the use of the miswak and stated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a servant uses the miswak and then stands up to pray, an angel stands behind him and listens attentively to his recitation. He draws close to him (or the narrator used some similar word) until the angel places his mouth upon the person's mouth, and whatever part of the Qur'an comes out of that person's mouth goes inside the angel. So keep your mouths pure and clean for the Qur'an."
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Ibn Majah recorded part of it, but that report is mawquf (attributed to a Companion), while this one is marfu' (attributed to the Prophet).

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to use the miswak and said: "What an excellent thing it is!"
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, al-Sari bin Isma'il, who is da'if (weak).

Malih bin Abdullah al-Khatmi reports from his father, from his grandfather, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Five things are among the sunnahs of the Messengers: modesty, forbearance, cupping, using the miswak and applying perfume."
Al-Bazzar recorded it; I have not found anyone who gives the biographies of Malih, his father or his grandfather.

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I held fast to the miswak until I feared that my teeth would be worn away."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was about to sleep at night, or whenever he woke up at night, he would use the miswak.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator whom I have not found anyone mentioning. Ahmad recorded it as an act of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him); its chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin Amr, who is da'if (weak), and there is disagreement about him.

Sayyiduna Zayd bin Khalid al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would use the miswak before leaving his house for prayer and the like.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would use the miswak several times during the night.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Wasil bin al-Sa'ib, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Sometimes the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would use the miswak four times during the night.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Musa bin Mutayr, who is extremely da'if (weak).

Yazid bin al-Asamm reports from Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) (Yazid had been raised in her care as an orphan) that a miswak was always kept in a vessel, and if she was not occupied with some work or with prayer, she would take the miswak and use it.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Many hadiths about the miswak have already passed in the chapter on purification, and others will come later in the chapter on adornment, if Allah wills.
