The virtue of the adhan

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "If people knew the virtue of calling the adhan, they would take up swords against one another for it."
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Lahi'ah, and there is weakness in him.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The mu'adhdhin is forgiven to the extent that (the sound of) his adhan reaches, and every moist and dry thing that hears his voice seeks forgiveness for him."
Ahmad, al-Tabarani in al-Kabir and al-Bazzar recorded it, except that he (al-Bazzar) has the words: "Every moist and dry thing answers him." The narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The mu'adhdhin is forgiven to the extent that his voice reaches, and he receives a reward like that of all the people who pray because of him."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Ja'far bin al-Zubayr, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Hand of the Most Merciful is over the head of the mu'adhdhin, and he is forgiven to the extent that his voice reaches, however far it may go."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Umar bin Hafs al-Abdi, and the hadith scholars are agreed on his weakness.

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "On the Day of Resurrection, those with the longest necks among the people will be the mu'adhdhins."
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except that al-A'mash said: "This hadith was narrated to me from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him)."

It is reported about Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "O Messenger of Allah! People engage in trade and buy and sell, and we are not able to do that." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are you not pleased that on the Day of Resurrection the mu'adhdhins will be the people with the longest necks?"
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Kabir, and al-Bazzar recorded something similar; its narrators have been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bilal is an excellent man, and none but a believer will follow him. He is the leader of the mu'adhdhins, and the mu'adhdhins will be the people with the longest necks on the Day of Resurrection."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Kabir and al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Husam bin Misakk, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection, the mu'adhdhins will be the people with the longest necks."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Lahi'ah, in whom there is weakness.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection, the mu'adhdhins will be the people with the longest necks." Then the narrator mentioned the full hadith.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Abu al-Salt al-Basri. Al-Mizzi said: Ali bin Zayd narrated from him, and he did not mention anyone else, whereas his son Khalid bin Abi al-Salt has also narrated from him, as mentioned in al-Tabarani's work, and that is this hadith. The rest of the narrators of this report have been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I regret that I did not ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to appoint Sayyiduna al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) as mu'adhdhins.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, al-Harith, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: I wished that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had entrusted the duty of calling the adhan to us. The narrator says: I asked: "Why is that?" He said: "Because on the Day of Resurrection their necks will be the longest among the people of Paradise."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Kabir and al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Yahya bin Urwah, and he is matruk al-hadith (abandoned in hadith).

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If I were to swear an oath, I would be true (the oath being about this): that the most beloved of Allah's servants to Allah Almighty are those who watch over the sun and the moon." (The narrator says:) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant those who call the adhan. (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) "They will be recognised on the Day of Resurrection by their long necks."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Junadah bin Marwan. Al-Dhahabi said: Abu Hatim accused him (of fabrication).

Al-A'mash narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator says: I think he narrated it as marfu' (attributed to the Prophet). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The mu'adhdhins will be the people with the longest necks on the Day of Resurrection."
Al-Bazzar recorded it; al-A'mash did not hear from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).

Sayyiduna Ibn Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The best of Allah's servants are those who watch over the sun, the moon and the stars for the remembrance of Allah."
Al-Tabarani in al-Kabir and al-Bazzar recorded it; its narrators have been declared trustworthy, but this report is ma'lul (has a hidden defect).

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "When those who call the adhan and those who recite the talbiyah come out of their graves (on the Day of Resurrection), the mu'adhdhin will be calling the adhan and the one reciting the talbiyah will be reciting the talbiyah."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Awsat; its chain contains majhul (unknown) narrators. I have not found anyone who mentions them.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Teach me" (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) "guide me to a deed that will make me enter Paradise." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Become a mu'adhdhin." He said: "I am not able to do that." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Become an imam." He said: "I am not able to do that." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then stand right behind the imam!"
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Dabbi, and he is munkar al-hadith (his hadith are rejected).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar narrates: A very old man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Teach me a deed by which I may draw near to Allah Almighty, my Lord." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hold fast to striving (jihad) in the path of Allah Almighty." He said: "I am not able to do that; I am advanced in age and I am weak." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then become a mu'adhdhin!"
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Qurayb, the father of al-Asma'i, and he is munkar al-hadith (his hadith are rejected).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The mu'adhdhin who hopes for reward is like the martyr who is soaked in his own blood. Between the adhan and the iqamah, that mu'adhdhin may ask Allah Almighty for whatever he desires."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Ibrahim bin Rustam, whom Ibn Adi declared da'if (weak). Abu Hatim said: He is not of that standing, but his position is one of truthfulness. Yahya bin Ma'in declared him thiqah (trustworthy). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) will come in the chapter on the mu'adhdhin who hopes for reward.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: If I had heard this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) only once or twice (until he counted up to seven times), that is, if I had not heard this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that many times, I would not narrate it. I heard him say: "On the Day of Resurrection three kinds of people will be on dunes of musk. The terror will not affect them; when the people are distressed, they will not be distressed: a man who acquires knowledge of the Qur'an and then remains devoted to it, seeking through it the pleasure of Allah Almighty and what is with Him; a man who calls the adhan for the five prayers every day, seeking through it the pleasure of Allah Almighty and what is with Him; and a slave whose servitude in this world does not keep him from obeying his Lord." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Al-Tirmidhi recorded this narration without this context.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Bahr bin Kaniz al-Saqqa', and he is da'if (weak).

It is reported from him (Ibn Umar) that he narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Three kinds of people will not be troubled by the Greatest Terror, nor will they face the reckoning; they will remain on dunes made of musk until the reckoning of all creation is finished: a man who recited the Qur'an seeking the pleasure of Allah Almighty and leads people in prayer with it while they are pleased with him; a caller who calls to the prayers seeking the pleasure of Allah Almighty (that is, he calls the adhan); and a slave who carries out well the affairs between himself and his Lord, and between himself and his masters."
Al-Tirmidhi recorded it in abridged form. Al-Tabarani also recorded it in al-Awsat and al-Saghir; its chain contains a narrator, Abd al-Samad bin Abd al-Aziz al-Muqri, whom Ibn Hibban mentioned in the book al-Thiqat.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the adhan is called in a town, Allah Almighty keeps that town safe from His punishment for that day."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in all three of his books; its chain contains a narrator, Abd al-Rahman bin Sa'd bin Ammar, whom Yahya bin Ma'in declared da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Ma'qil bin Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever people among whom the adhan is called in the morning remain under the protection of Allah Almighty until evening comes, and whenever the adhan is called among a people in the evening, they remain under the protection of Allah Almighty until morning comes."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Aghlab bin Tamim, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Ma'qil bin Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty does not give attention to anything as much as He gives attention to the adhan and to the recitation of the Qur'an in a beautiful voice."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Sallam al-Tawil, and he is matruk (abandoned).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The gates of the sky are opened for five things: the recitation of the Qur'an, the meeting of the two armies, the descent of rain, the supplication of the oppressed, and the adhan."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Saghir. Its chain contains a narrator, Hafs bin Sulayman al-Asadi, whom Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him), Imam Muslim, Yahya bin Ma'in, Imam Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) and Ali bin al-Madini declared da'if (weak), while Imam Ahmad and Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah (trustworthy); however, he (Ibn Hibban) recorded the word al-Azdi in place of al-Asadi.
