Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When any of you uses stones (for cleansing after relieving himself), he should use them in an odd number. Indeed Allah Almighty is Odd (Witr) and He loves what is odd. Do you not see that the heavens are seven, the earths are seven, and the circuits of Tawaf are seven?" (The narrator says:) He mentioned some other things as well.
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; he added the words "and the stoning pebbles (al-jimar)". Its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When any of you uses stones (for cleansing), he should use three stones." In one report the words are: "When any of you defecates, he should wipe three times." Imam Ahmad recorded both of these reports, and the narrators of the report "When any of you uses stones" are thiqat (trustworthy).

Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy, except that the case of Abu Shu'ayb, the companion (that is, student) of Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), is different: I have not seen any declaration of his reliability (ta'dil) or any criticism (jarh) of him.

Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Qays bin al-Rabi', whom Sufyan al-Thawri and Shu'bah declared thiqah (trustworthy), while a group (of scholars) called him da'if (weak).

Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Atiq bin Ya'qub al-Zubayri, about whom Imam Abu Zur'ah says: He memorized the "Muwatta" during the lifetime of Imam Malik.

Alqamah narrates: A man from among the polytheists said to Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him): It seems to me that your master has taught you everything, so much so that he has even taught you how you should go to relieve yourselves! Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If you wish to mock (then let me tell you) that he taught us that (while relieving ourselves) our private parts should not face the qiblah (the narrator says: I think he also said:) that we should not cleanse ourselves (istinja) with our right hands, that we should not cleanse ourselves with dung, that we should not cleanse ourselves with bone, and that we should not cleanse ourselves with fewer than three stones.
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.
