Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "His (the freer's) right of wala' over him has been established, so he has no right to reject his wala' and make him a slave (again); nor may he give it (the wala') as a gift or sell it."
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade "that wala' be sold or given as a gift."

Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The bond of wala' is like the bond of lineage; it may not be sold, nor given as a gift."

Abu Bakr bin Ziyad al-Naysaburi (may Allah have mercy on him) said right after this hadith: This is an error, because the trustworthy narrators did not narrate it this way; rather, al-Hasan narrated it mursal (without the Companion).
Hadith Reference
Al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The bond of wala' is like the bond of lineage. It cannot be sold or given as a gift."
The Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It has also been narrated through other routes, all of which are weak.
Hadith Reference
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The bond of wala' is like the bond of lineage; it shall not be given as a gift or sold."
Sulayman (may Allah have mercy on him) said: No one narrated this hadith from Sufyan except Damrah.
The Shaykh said: Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Yusuf al-Firyabi narrated it from Damrah just as the group narrated it: "(The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) forbade selling wala' and giving it as a gift." So it seems the error occurred from someone else, and Allah knows best.
Hadith Reference
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The bond of wala' is like the bond of lineage; it shall not be given as a gift or sold."
This is an error (wahm) by Yahya bin Sulaym, or by someone below him in the chain, in both the chain and the text, for the huffaz narrated it only from Ubaydullah bin Umar, from Abdullah bin Dinar, from Ibn Umar, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he forbade selling wala' and giving it as a gift.
Hadith Reference
The same report was also narrated (through the route of the huffaz) from Ubaydullah bin Umar, and he mentioned it.
Muhammad bin Abd al-Malik bin Abi al-Shawarib narrated it from Yahya bin Sulaym with the error in its chain but not in its text. Abu Isa (al-Tirmidhi) (may Allah have mercy on him) said, in what reached me from him: I asked al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) about it, and he said: Yahya bin Sulaym erred in his narration; it is only from Abdullah bin Dinar, from Ibn Umar, and Abdullah bin Dinar alone narrated this hadith, meaning with the well-known wording.
Hadith Reference
Likewise (through another chain).
This is a third discrepancy from Yahya bin Sulaym, and he had a poor memory and made many errors, and Allah knows best.
The Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: In this regard it has been narrated from Abdullah bin Nafi' through two chains in which he erred, and there was disagreement over him in both of them: from Yahya bin Abi Unaysah, from al-Zuhri, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), as a saying of the Prophet (marfu'). Al-Zuhri has no basis for it, and Yahya bin Abi Unaysah is extremely weak. This wording is narrated only mursal, as we mentioned earlier, and it is also narrated from people below the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Hadith Reference
Qatadah says that Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The bond of wala' is like the bond of lineage; it shall not be sold or given as a gift.

Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Wala' is like a pact of alliance, so I will keep it where Allah has kept it.

Mujahid narrates from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The bond of wala' stands in the place of the bond of lineage; it cannot be sold or given as a gift. I will keep it where Allah has kept it."
