It has been narrated to us through al-Harith bin Abd al-Rahman, from Ikrimah, from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), that he said: "For every bird other than the pigeon (if it is hunted), its value is due (to be paid as a penalty)."

Abdullah bin Abi Ammar (may Allah have mercy on him) said that he came with Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) and Ka'b al-Ahbar (may Allah have mercy on him), among a group of people in ihram, from Bayt al-Maqdis for Umrah. While we were on the way and Ka'b was warming himself at a fire, a swarm of locusts passed by him. He caught two locusts and killed them, forgetting that he was in ihram. Then he remembered his ihram and threw them away. When we reached Madinah, the people went in to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and I went in with them. Ka'b related the story of the two locusts to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Who did this happen to? Perhaps you, O Ka'b? He said: Yes. He said: The people of Himyar love locusts. What have you decided in yourself (as its penalty)? He said: Two dirhams. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Well done! Two dirhams are better than a hundred locusts. Give what you have decided in yourself.

Qasim bin Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I was sitting with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) when a man asked him about a locust that he kills while in ihram. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: For it a handful of food is due, although you would surely get a handful of locusts for that; but even so (give it).
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: His words 'you would surely get a handful of locusts' mean that only its value is due for it; and by 'even so' he means: you take precaution and pay out more than is due from you, after I have told you that it is more than what is due from you.

Ata said: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) was asked about hunting locusts inside the sanctuary, and he said: No, and he forbade it. (Ata) said: I said to him, or a man among the people said: Your own people catch them while sitting with their knees drawn up (muhtabun) in the mosque. He said: They do not know.

Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated the like of it from Muslim, from Ibn Jurayj, from Ata, from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), except that it has the word munhanun (bending over). Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) and Muslim said: The more correct of the two is munhanun, which is what the hadith masters (huffaz) narrated from Ibn Jurayj.
