(a) Ata' bin Yasar narrates from Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): The sun was eclipsed in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) led the people in prayer and stood for a long time, about as long as the recitation of Surah al-Baqarah. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed a long bowing, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head from the bowing. Then he stood for a long time, but somewhat less than the first standing. Then he performed a long bowing, but somewhat less than the first bowing. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood for a long time, but it was somewhat less than the first standing. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed a long bowing, but it was less than the first bowing. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head from the bowing and stood for a long time, but it was less than the first standing. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed a long bowing, but it was less than the first bowing. Then he prostrated. Then he finished the prayer, and the eclipse had ended. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The sun and the moon are among the signs of Allah. They do not lose their light for anyone's death or life. When you see this, remember Allah abundantly." The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said: O Messenger of Allah! We saw you reaching for something in this place of yours, then we saw you stepping backwards. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I was shown Paradise. I reached out to take a bunch of grapes; had I taken it, you would have eaten from it as long as the world remains. And I was also shown Hell; I have never seen a more terrifying sight than it until today. And I saw that most of its inhabitants were women." They said: O Messenger of Allah! Why? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Because of their ingratitude." It was asked: Are they ungrateful to Allah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are ungrateful to their husbands and ungrateful for kindness. If you were to treat one of them well for a lifetime, and then she saw some small shortcoming from you, she would at once say: I have never seen any good from you."
(b) In the hadith of al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) it says: The sun lost its light, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the people in prayer; but he did not mention the words 'more terrifying than it.'

Urwah bin al-Zubayr narrates from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): The sun was eclipsed during the lifetime of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the mosque and stood; he (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir and the people formed rows behind him (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited at length. Then he said the takbir, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed a long bowing. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head from the bowing and said: 'Sami' Allahu liman hamidah, Rabbana wa lakal-hamd' (Allah hears the one who praises Him; our Lord, and to You belongs all praise). Then he stood and recited at length, a recitation somewhat shorter than the first recitation. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir and performed a long bowing, but it was somewhat shorter than the first bowing. Then he said: 'Sami' Allahu liman hamidah, Rabbana wa lakal-hamd.' Then he did the same in the second rak'ah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) completed four bowings and four prostrations, and the sun had become bright before he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood and addressed the people, praising Allah as He deserves, and then said: "The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah; they do not lose their light for anyone's death or life. When you see that, hasten to the prayer."

Ahmad bin Salih (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates the same, but with an addition: I said to Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him): Your brother (may Allah be pleased with him) did not pray more than two rak'ahs at the solar eclipse, like the Fajr prayer. He said: He forgot the Sunnah, or he made a mistake.

He (peace and blessings be upon him) prolonged the standing, then bowed and prolonged the bowing as well. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head from the bowing. Then he stood for a long time, somewhat less than the first standing. Then he bowed and prolonged the bowing, but it was less than the first bowing. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed a long bowing, but it was somewhat less than the first bowing. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated, and the sun became bright. He (peace and blessings be upon him) praised and extolled Allah. Then he said: "The sun and the moon do not lose their light for anyone's death or life; rather, they are both signs of Allah. When you see them (eclipsed), pray, give charity, remember Allah and supplicate." Then he said: "O Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! By Allah, none of you is more jealous (ghayur) than Allah that His male servant or His female servant should commit fornication. O Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! By Allah, if you knew what I know, you would weep much and laugh little." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised both his hands and said: "Listen! Have I not conveyed?"

Then she (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "Will people be punished in their graves?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I seek refuge with Allah from that." Then one morning he (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted a riding animal, and the sun was eclipsed. He (peace and blessings be upon him) returned at forenoon (duha). Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I said: O Messenger of Allah! Will we be punished in our graves? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said a word: "I seek refuge with Allah from that." Then one day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out riding with a party, and the sun was eclipsed. Then I and other women came out of the apartment. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: The sun was eclipsed in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) stood for so long that people began to say: He (peace and blessings be upon him) will not bow. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed for so long that people began to say: He (peace and blessings be upon him) will not raise his head from the bowing. When he raised his head from the bowing, it was said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) will not prostrate. Then when he prostrated, it was so long that people began to say: He (peace and blessings be upon him) will not raise his head from the prostration. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head and sat, and remained sitting for a long time, and it was said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) will not prostrate. Then he prostrated and made the prostration long, then raised his head from the prostration, and did the same in the second rak'ah, until the sun became bright.
Ata' bin al-Sa'ib (may Allah have mercy on him) and others mentioned the long prostrations from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both), but did not retain the mention of two bowings in one rak'ah.

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: The sun was eclipsed in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a very hot day. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the prayer and stood for a long time, until people began to fall down. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed and made it long. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head and remained standing for a long time. Then he performed a long bowing, then raised his head from the bowing and remained (standing) for a long time. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed two prostrations. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood and did the same (in the second rak'ah), so there were four bowings and four prostrations. He (peace and blessings be upon him) moved forward and backward during the prayer. Then he turned to his Companions and said: "Paradise and Hell were presented to me. Paradise was brought near to me, so that if I had wished to take a cluster from it, I would have taken it," or he said: "my hand fell short of it"; (the narrator) Hisham was in doubt. "And Hell was presented to me, and I was moving back out of fear that it might cover you. I saw in it a tall, black Himyari woman being punished because of a cat. She had tied it up, and neither fed it nor gave it water, nor let it go free to eat the vermin of the earth. And I saw Abu Thumamah Amr bin Malik dragging his intestines in the Fire. People used to say that the sun and the moon lose their light only for the death of a great man, whereas they are two of the signs of Allah which He shows you. When they are eclipsed, pray until it clears."

Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came out and led the people in prayer, (performing) two bowings and two prostrations in each rak'ah. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) left and entered his house, and Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) sat by the apartment of Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and we sat with him. He said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to command prayer at the eclipse of the sun and the moon, and: "When you see that the eclipse has befallen the sun or the moon, hasten to the prayer.
