Urwah bin al-Zubayr narrates from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): The sun was eclipsed during the lifetime of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the mosque and stood; he (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir and the people formed rows behind him (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited at length. Then he said the takbir, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed a long bowing. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head from the bowing and said: 'Sami' Allahu liman hamidah, Rabbana wa lakal-hamd' (Allah hears the one who praises Him; our Lord, and to You belongs all praise). Then he stood and recited at length, a recitation somewhat shorter than the first recitation. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir and performed a long bowing, but it was somewhat shorter than the first bowing. Then he said: 'Sami' Allahu liman hamidah, Rabbana wa lakal-hamd.' Then he did the same in the second rak'ah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) completed four bowings and four prostrations, and the sun had become bright before he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood and addressed the people, praising Allah as He deserves, and then said: "The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah; they do not lose their light for anyone's death or life. When you see that, hasten to the prayer."
