Musa bin Anas (may Allah have mercy on him) says that al-Hajjaj bin Yusuf addressed the people, saying: Wash your faces, your hands and your feet, and wash their outer parts, inner parts and upper parts, for this is closer to your Paradise (i.e. it is a means of entering Paradise).
(b) Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Allah spoke the truth and al-Hajjaj lied. He used to recite "arjulikum" in the genitive.
(c) Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) objected only to the reading, not to the washing. Likewise, we have narrated the report of Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) in which the obligation of washing is mentioned.

Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqil narrates that Ali bin al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) sent him to Rubayyi' bint Mu'awwidh (may Allah be pleased with her) to ask her about the (manner of) ablution of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). She narrated the hadith about the manner of ablution of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), in which it says that he (peace and blessings be upon him) washed his feet. She says: Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) came to me and I narrated the hadith to him, and he said: I find in the Book (the Qur'an) only two washings and two wipings.
If this is authentic, it is possible that Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) took the reading to be in the genitive, which requires wiping. When it reached Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had warned the one who did not wash them, or who left any part of them (unwashed), Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) then held washing the feet to be obligatory and recited the verse in the accusative. The accusative reading has also been narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both).

(b) In the narration of Abu Salamah al-Khuza'i (may Allah have mercy on him): He (Ibn Abbas) took a handful of water, then sprinkled it on his right foot and washed it, then took another handful and washed his left foot with it, then said: "This is how I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performing ablution."

(c) Hisham bin Sa'd is not very strong; his contradiction of the reliable (thiqah) narrators is not acceptable, for they are a whole group and he is alone.

Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) says that it is transmitted from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that "he (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped over the upper part of his feet, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) sprinkled water on their upper part."
(b) One of these two hadiths comes with a sound (salih) chain; had it stood alone it would be established, but those who contradict it are more numerous and more reliable. As for the other hadith, it is not among what the scholars of hadith regard as established, even if it stood alone. The Shaykh says that by the first hadith is meant the hadith of al-Darawardi and others transmitted from Zayd, and by the second hadith the hadith of Abd Khayr from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) about wiping over the upper part of the feet. We have explained that, if it is authentic, he meant the upper part of the leather socks (khuffs), and it is mentioned with its defects in the chapter on wiping over the khuffs. It has also been narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) by another route with the meaning of the first hadith.

(a) Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came to my house. He called for water, and we brought a bowl holding one mudd or close to it, and it was placed before him. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had urinated, and he said: "O Ibn Abbas, shall I not perform for you the ablution of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" I said: "Of course! May my father and mother be ransomed for you." The narrator says: A vessel was placed for him, and he washed his hands, then rinsed his mouth, drew water into his nose and blew it out. Then he took water in both his hands together and threw it onto his face, and put his thumbs into the front part of his ears. The narrator says: Then he did the same three times. Then he took a palmful of water with his right hand and poured it onto his forehead, then let it run down over his face. Then he washed his right arm up to the elbow three times, then the other arm likewise. Then he wiped his head and the outer part of his ears. Then he took two palmfuls of water and threw them onto his foot, and moistened the sandal that was on the foot. Then he did the same with the other foot. I said: "In the sandals?" He said: "Yes, in the sandals." The narrator says: I said: "In the sandals?" He said: "In the sandals." I said: "In the sandals?" He said: "In the sandals."

Abu Hayyah relates: I saw Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) performing ablution. He washed his palms and cleaned them, then rinsed his mouth three times and drew water into his nose three times, and washed his face and forearms three times, and wiped his head. Then he washed his feet including the ankles. Then he stood up, took the water left over from his ablution and drank it while standing. Then he said: I wanted to show you what the ablution of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was like.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he prayed Zuhr, then sat in a street of Kufa to attend to people's needs until the time of the Asr prayer came. Then a cup of water was brought, and he took one handful from it and with it wiped his face, his hands, his head and his feet. Then he stood up and drank the remaining water while standing, then said: People dislike drinking while standing, yet the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did as I have done. And he said: "This is the ablution of one who has not broken his ablution."
(b) In this authentic hadith there is evidence that what is meant by the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is that if a person has not broken his ablution, he may do this. It is as though the hadith was shortened, and this saying was not transmitted: "This is the ablution of one who has not broken his ablution."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he called for a cup of water, then said: "Where are those people who dislike drinking while standing?"
The narrator says: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) took hold of it (the cup) and drank while standing. Then he performed a light ablution and wiped over his sandals, then said: "the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did it like this, as long as one has not broken his ablution."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he called for a cup of water, then performed a light ablution, then wiped over his sandals, then said: This is how the ablution of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is for a person in a state of purity, as long as he has not broken his ablution.
(b) In this there is evidence that what is reported from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) about wiping over the sandals concerns a voluntary ablution, not an obligatory ablution required because of something that breaks ablution; or he meant washing the feet while in the sandals; or he meant wiping over his socks and sandals, as some narrators reported it from him with the specification of socks, meaning socks with soles. Washing the feet is established from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and washing the feet is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), as is the warning against leaving it.
