Bayhaqi 356 — The reading of those who read wa arjulakum

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he called for a cup of water, then performed a light ablution, then wiped over his sandals, then said: This is how the ablution of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is for a person in a state of purity, as long as he has not broken his ablution.
(b) In this there is evidence that what is reported from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) about wiping over the sandals concerns a voluntary ablution, not an obligatory ablution required because of something that breaks ablution; or he meant washing the feet while in the sandals; or he meant wiping over his socks and sandals, as some narrators reported it from him with the specification of socks, meaning socks with soles. Washing the feet is established from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and washing the feet is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), as is the warning against leaving it.
