It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: The command prohibiting wine was revealed concerning two tribes of the Ansar who drank wine until, when they became thoroughly drunk, they began to assault one another. When they came to their senses, a man would see the marks of wounds on his face, head and beard and say: "My brother so-and-so did this to me. By Allah! Had he been kind to me, he would not have done this." They were brothers and there was no rancour in their hearts, but the wine produced rancour. Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed these verses: "O you who believe, wine and gambling" up to "so will you not desist?" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 90]. At this, some people said: "It is utter filth, yet it was in the stomachs of those who were martyred at Badr and Uhud." Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "There is no sin upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they ate" until He said: "and Allah loves those who do good." [Surah al-Ma'idah: 93]

Hadith Takhrij «
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Before wine was prohibited, a man from the Ansar invited us to a meal. Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) came forward and led the Maghrib prayer. He recited the surah "Say: O disbelievers" and became confused in it (under the effect of intoxication). Then this verse was revealed: "Do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated" [Surah al-Nisa: 43].
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. There is disagreement from Ata bin al-Sa'ib about this narration in three ways, of which this first form is the most authentic.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he, Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf and another man were drinking wine (before the final prohibition of wine). Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) led them in prayer and mixed up the words in reciting the surah "Say: O disbelievers". Then this verse was revealed: "Do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated." [Surah al-Nisa: 43]

Hadith Takhrij «
It is narrated from Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami that Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) prepared a meal and invited some of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), among whom was Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). Then (during the prayer) he recited, in the surah "Say: O disbelievers": "I do not worship what you worship, and we are worshippers of what you have worshipped." At this, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "O you who believe, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying." [Surah al-Nisa: 43]
All of these chains of narration are sahih (authentic), and the decisive standing belongs to the narration of Sufyan al-Thawri, because he has the strongest memory of all who narrated it from Ata bin al-Sa'ib.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "O Allah! Make clear to us a ruling concerning wine." Then this verse was revealed: "Do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying" [Surah al-Nisa: 43], to the end of the verse. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and recited this verse to him, but it was as though Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was not fully satisfied with it as the ruling he wanted. So he said again: "O Allah! Make clear to us a ruling concerning wine." Then this verse was revealed: "They ask you about wine and gambling. Say: In them both is great sin and some benefits for people, but their sin is greater than their benefit." [Surah al-Baqarah: 219]. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and recited this verse to him, but it was as though this too did not give Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) the satisfaction he sought. So he said once more: "O Allah! Make clear to us a ruling concerning wine." Then this verse was revealed: "O you who believe, wine, gambling, idols and divining arrows are only filth from the work of Satan, so avoid them", until He reached His words: "So will you not desist?" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 91]. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Umar and recited this verse to him, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O our Lord! We have desisted."
