It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "O Allah! Make clear to us a ruling concerning wine." Then this verse was revealed: "Do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying" [Surah al-Nisa: 43], to the end of the verse. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and recited this verse to him, but it was as though Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was not fully satisfied with it as the ruling he wanted. So he said again: "O Allah! Make clear to us a ruling concerning wine." Then this verse was revealed: "They ask you about wine and gambling. Say: In them both is great sin and some benefits for people, but their sin is greater than their benefit." [Surah al-Baqarah: 219]. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and recited this verse to him, but it was as though this too did not give Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) the satisfaction he sought. So he said once more: "O Allah! Make clear to us a ruling concerning wine." Then this verse was revealed: "O you who believe, wine, gambling, idols and divining arrows are only filth from the work of Satan, so avoid them", until He reached His words: "So will you not desist?" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 91]. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Umar and recited this verse to him, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O our Lord! We have desisted."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscripts (S) and (M) this word has been corrupted and written as "al-Hawra'".
Note / Clarification: In manuscript (S) the word is "faka'annama" (so it is as if).
(3138). Grading: This is a "sahih hadith". Technical note / Defect ('illah): This particular chain is "da'if" (weak) on account of Humayd bin Hammad bin Abi al-Khuwar, who also contradicted more trustworthy narrators. The correct version is that it is the narration of "Abu Maysarah, from 'Umar", as al-Daraqutni preferred in "al-'Ilal" (207); it has passed earlier with the author through this route at no. (3138). Note / Clarification: Abu Ishaq is "'Amr bin 'Abd Allah al-Sabi'i". Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Awsat" (1464) through the route of Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Sadaqah, from Muhammad bin Ma'mar al-Bahrani, with this same chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Tabarani said after it: No one narrated this hadith from Abu Ishaq, from Harithah, except Hamzah, and no one from Hamzah except Humayd; Muhammad bin Ma'mar is alone in it. Whereas people in general narrated it through the route of "Abu Ishaq, from Abu Maysarah 'Amr bin Shurahbil".
