Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7404

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Raisins and dates (made together) are wine; that is, when a nabidh (steeped drink) is made from both of them together."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: With this wording the narration is sahih as "mawquf" (the saying of a Companion).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy), but al-A'mash erred in giving it as "marfu'" (the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him); a group of hadith masters (huffaz) contradicted him and gave it as "mawquf" on Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him).
Note / Clarification: Shayban in the chain is Shayban bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Nahwi.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i narrated it in (5036) through the route of al-Qasim bin Zakariyya, from 'Ubayd Allah bin Musa, with this same chain.

Reference / Source: 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated it in (16969) and al-Nasa'i in (6762) through the route of Sufyan al-Thawri, Ibn Abi Shaybah in 8/ 181 through the route of 'Abd al-Rahim bin Sulayman, and Ahmad in "Kitab al-Ashribah" (147) and al-Nasa'i in (5035) through the route of Shu'bah.
Details of the narration: All three narrate it from Muharib bin Dithar, from Jabir, as "mawquf". Its wording is: "Unripe and ripe dates (busr and tamr) are wine." In the wording of Ahmad's narration, with doubt, it is: "Dates and raisins, or dates and unripe dates, are wine."

Grading: Al-Tirmidhi declared it "hasan sahih".
