Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7403

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salamah bin al-Muhabbaq (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), on the occasion of the Battle of Tabuk, asked a woman for water. She said: "I have no water except in a waterskin made from (the hide of) a dead animal." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Have you not tanned it?" She said: "Yes, I have." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then its tanning is its purification."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This is "sahih li-ghayrihi", and its chain could possibly be graded hasan.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Two narrators narrated from Jawn bin Qatadah, and Ibn Hibban listed him in "al-Thiqat", while 'Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad al-Harithi is not that strong, but he is corroborated (by another narrator). Al-Hasan in the chain is "al-Hasan al-Basri".

Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A shahid (supporting report) for his (peace and blessings be upon him) words "its tanning is its purification (dhakah)" is the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), which is in Sahih al-Bukhari (1492) and Sahih Muslim (363); it is also narrated via Ibn 'Abbas from Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) in Sahih Muslim (364).
