It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Before wine was prohibited, a man from the Ansar invited us to a meal. Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) came forward and led the Maghrib prayer. He recited the surah "Say: O disbelievers" and became confused in it (under the effect of intoxication). Then this verse was revealed: "Do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated" [Surah al-Nisa: 43].
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. There is disagreement from Ata bin al-Sa'ib about this narration in three ways, of which this first form is the most authentic.

Grading: Its chain is "sahih". Technical note / Defect ('illah): This narration of Sufyan (who is Sufyan al-Thawri) from 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib is from before his "ikhtilat" (deterioration of memory). Abu Ja'far al-Razi agreed with Sufyan in giving this narration as "mawsul" (connected), while other narrators contradicted them and narrated it from 'Ata' as "mursal", as will come in narration (7408). Note / Clarification: Abu 'Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami is 'Abd Allah bin Habib bin Rabi'ah al-Kufi. Reference / Source: Abu Ja'far al-Nahhas narrated it in "al-Nasikh wa al-Mansukh" p. 338 through the route of Ya'qub bin Ibrahim al-Dawraqi, from Waki' bin al-Jarrah, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Musaddad narrated it in his "Musnad" (as in "Ithaf al-Khiyarah" 5660), and through his route Abu Dawud (3671), al-Bayhaqi 1/ 379 and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" 2/ (567), from Yahya al-Qattan, from Sufyan al-Thawri. Details of the narration: In the narration of all these sources it is mentioned that the one who led the prayer (while intoxicated) was 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Reference / Source: This narration has passed earlier at no. (3238) through the route of Abu Nu'aym and Qabisah from Sufyan al-Thawri, where the name of the one who led the prayer was left "mubham" (unnamed). 'Abd bin Humayd narrated it in (82), al-Tirmidhi in (3026), al-Bazzar in (598), al-Tahawi in "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (4777), Ibn Abi Hatim in his "Tafsir" 3/ 958 and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" 2/ (566) through the route of Abu Ja'far al-Razi (who is 'Isa bin 'Abd Allah bin Mahan), from 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib. Details of the narration: In all these sources the one who led the prayer is identified as 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), except in the narration of al-Bazzar and Ibn Abi Hatim, where the person is "mubham" (unnamed). Grading: Al-Tirmidhi declared it a "hasan sahih gharib hadith".
