Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7407

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he, Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf and another man were drinking wine (before the final prohibition of wine). Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) led them in prayer and mixed up the words in reciting the surah "Say: O disbelievers". Then this verse was revealed: "Do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated." [Surah al-Nisa: 43]

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscripts (Z) and (K) this word has been corrupted into "Ibn", while it is missing altogether from manuscripts (S) and (M).

Grading: Its chain is "sahih", like the previous narration.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i narrated it (as in al-Mizzi's "Tuhfat al-Ashraf" 10175), al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" 5/ 95 and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" 2/ (568) through the route of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi, from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: In these narrations the one who led the prayer is stated to be "'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Awf". We could not find the actual wording of al-Nasa'i's narration, but al-Mundhiri mentioned it in "Mukhtasar Sunan Abi Dawud" 5/ 259.
