Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7408

It is narrated from Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami that Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) prepared a meal and invited some of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), among whom was Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). Then (during the prayer) he recited, in the surah "Say: O disbelievers": "I do not worship what you worship, and we are worshippers of what you have worshipped." At this, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "O you who believe, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying." [Surah al-Nisa: 43]
All of these chains of narration are sahih (authentic), and the decisive standing belongs to the narration of Sufyan al-Thawri, because he has the strongest memory of all who narrated it from Ata bin al-Sa'ib.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This is a "sahih hadith".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although the narrators of this chain are thiqah (trustworthy), Khalid bin 'Abd Allah (al-Wasiti) heard from 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib after his "ikhtilat" (deterioration of memory). However, in the previous two hadiths it is authentically established as "mawsul" (connected) through other routes.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated it in his "Tafsir" 5/ 95 and Ibn al-Mundhir in "al-Awsat" (7713) through the route of Hammad bin Salamah, and Tammam al-Razi in his "Fawa'id" (1592) through the route of 'Ali bin 'Asim; both of them narrate it from 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, from Abu 'Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami, as "mursal".
Note / Clarification: In their narrations the one who led the prayer is 'Ali, except in the narration of Ibn al-Mundhir, which is unspecified, with the words: "They put a man forward, and he led them in prayer."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Among those who narrated it from 'Ata' as "mursal" are also Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, Ibrahim bin Tahman and Dawud bin al-Zibriqan.
Reference / Source: Al-Mundhiri mentioned this in "Mukhtasar Sunan Abi Dawud" 5/ 259.
