(3). It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out to look over the graveyard, and we went out with him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed us, so we sat down. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed between the graves until he reached a particular grave, and there he spoke in private communion for a long time. Then the sound of the Messenger of Allah's (peace and blessings be upon him) weeping (sobbing) rose, and we too began to weep because of the weeping of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came towards us, and Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) went forward to meet him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, what made you weep? Your weeping has made us weep too and has greatly alarmed us." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) came and sat with us and said: "Did my weeping alarm you?" We said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The grave at which you saw me in private communion is the grave of my mother, Aminah bint Wahb. I asked my Lord for permission to visit her and He granted me permission for that; and I asked His permission to seek forgiveness for her, and I was not given permission for that. And this verse was revealed to me: 'It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to ask forgiveness for the polytheists', until the verse was completed, 'And Ibrahim's asking forgiveness for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him.' So there came over me the same tenderness that comes over a child for his mother, and it was this tenderness that made me weep." [Surah al-Tawbah: 113 - 114]
This hadith is sahih in its chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it with this wording. However, Imam Muslim recorded the hadith of Yazid bin Kaysan, from Abu Hazim, from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), in brief on this subject.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he was asked concerning this saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "And His Throne was upon the water" [Surah Hud: 7], upon what was the water (resting)? He said: "Upon the back (surface) of the wind."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to go on a military expedition, so he called Sayyiduna Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) and ordered him to stay behind in Madinah. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, I will never stay behind after you." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called me and, before I could say anything, made it binding on me to stay behind. He said: I began to weep (on hearing this), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Ali, what is making you weep?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah, more than one thing is making me weep. First, tomorrow Quraysh will say: 'How quickly he stayed behind from his cousin and abandoned him!' The second thing is that I wanted to attain the blessing of striving (jihad) in the way of Allah, because Allah Almighty says: 'Nor do they tread any ground that enrages the disbelievers, nor do they inflict any injury upon an enemy' [Surah al-Tawbah: 120] (to the end of the verse). So I wanted to attain the bounty of Allah." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As for your saying that Quraysh will say that you abandoned your brother, you have the best example in me: they even called me a sorcerer, a soothsayer and a liar. Are you not pleased that you should be to me in the position of Harun (peace be upon him) to Musa (peace be upon him)? Except that there is no Prophet after me. And as for your desire to seek the bounty of Allah, here are some loads of black pepper that have come to us from Yemen; sell them, and you and Fatimah benefit from them until Allah grants you more of His bounty. For the welfare of Madinah is not possible without me or you."

He took my hand and began teaching me the subtleties of speech. He said: "O Abu al-Aliyah, do not say: 'You turned away from the prayer (insaraftum)', but rather say: 'You completed the prayer (qadaytum)', because (Allah has used the words of turning away for the hypocrites, as) Allah Almighty says: 'They turned away; Allah has turned away their hearts' [Surah al-Tawbah: 127]."
