Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3332

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he was asked concerning this saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "And His Throne was upon the water" [Surah Hud: 7], upon what was the water (resting)? He said: "Upon the back (surface) of the wind."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its isnad is strong (qawi).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although there is criticism of Abu Hudhayfah (Musa bin Mas'ud al-Nahdi) in his narration from Sufyan al-Thawri, more than one of Sufyan's trustworthy students corroborated him in it. This report is mawquf, and most likely it is among what Ibn Abbas received from the People of the Book, for nothing in the hadiths from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) points to this meaning. And Allah the Exalted knows best.
