Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3333

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to go on a military expedition, so he called Sayyiduna Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) and ordered him to stay behind in Madinah. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, I will never stay behind after you." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called me and, before I could say anything, made it binding on me to stay behind. He said: I began to weep (on hearing this), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Ali, what is making you weep?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah, more than one thing is making me weep. First, tomorrow Quraysh will say: 'How quickly he stayed behind from his cousin and abandoned him!' The second thing is that I wanted to attain the blessing of striving (jihad) in the way of Allah, because Allah Almighty says: 'Nor do they tread any ground that enrages the disbelievers, nor do they inflict any injury upon an enemy' [Surah al-Tawbah: 120] (to the end of the verse). So I wanted to attain the bounty of Allah." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As for your saying that Quraysh will say that you abandoned your brother, you have the best example in me: they even called me a sorcerer, a soothsayer and a liar. Are you not pleased that you should be to me in the position of Harun (peace be upon him) to Musa (peace be upon him)? Except that there is no Prophet after me. And as for your desire to seek the bounty of Allah, here are some loads of black pepper that have come to us from Yemen; sell them, and you and Fatimah benefit from them until Allah grants you more of His bounty. For the welfare of Madinah is not possible without me or you."
This hadith is sahih in its chain, and the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts (the word) "Jubayr" was corrupted into "Hasan", and in the margin of manuscript (S) it is suggested that it is "Jubayr".

Grading: Its isnad is very weak; Abdullah bin Bukayr al-Ghanawi is munkar al-hadith (his narrations are rejected), as al-Dhahabi said in his "Talkhis", and his shaykh Hakim bin Jubayr is agreed to be da'if (weak).
Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar (817) recorded it from Ibrahim bin Sa'id, from Muhammad bin Bukayr, with this same isnad.
Grading: And he declared it weak because of Hakim bin Jubayr.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Hatim recorded it in abridged form in his "Tafsir" (6/ 1908) by way of al-Rabi' bin Nafi', from Abdullah bin Bukayr, with this isnad.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And the words in it: "Are you not pleased to be to me in the position of Harun to Musa, except that there is no prophet after me?" - in the story of his (peace and blessings be upon him) setting out for Tabuk and leaving Ali in charge of Madinah - are authentically established from the hadith of Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas, recorded by al-Bukhari (4416) and Muslim (2404).
Note / Clarification: "Al-abhar" here is the plural of "al-buhar", a measure of weight equal to three hundred ratl; it is also said to be a load (idl) carried on a camel. See al-Zabidi's "Taj al-Arus" (root: b-h-r).

Grading: Al-Dhahabi said in his "Talkhis": How can it be sahih when signs of fabrication are evident on it? Its isnad contains Abdullah bin Bukayr al-Ghanawi, who is munkar al-hadith, from Hakim bin Jubayr, who is weak and inclined to Rafidism.
