Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3331

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out to look over the graveyard, and we went out with him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed us, so we sat down. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed between the graves until he reached a particular grave, and there he spoke in private communion for a long time. Then the sound of the Messenger of Allah's (peace and blessings be upon him) weeping (sobbing) rose, and we too began to weep because of the weeping of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came towards us, and Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) went forward to meet him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, what made you weep? Your weeping has made us weep too and has greatly alarmed us." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) came and sat with us and said: "Did my weeping alarm you?" We said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The grave at which you saw me in private communion is the grave of my mother, Aminah bint Wahb. I asked my Lord for permission to visit her and He granted me permission for that; and I asked His permission to seek forgiveness for her, and I was not given permission for that. And this verse was revealed to me: 'It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to ask forgiveness for the polytheists', until the verse was completed, 'And Ibrahim's asking forgiveness for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him.' So there came over me the same tenderness that comes over a child for his mother, and it was this tenderness that made me weep." [Surah al-Tawbah: 113 - 114]
This hadith is sahih in its chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it with this wording. However, Imam Muslim recorded the hadith of Yazid bin Kaysan, from Abu Hazim, from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), in brief on this subject.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts it reads "min al-riqq", and what we have established (in the text) is taken from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis".

Grading: Its isnad is da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Jurayj (Abd al-Malik bin Abd al-Aziz) is a mudallis and narrated with 'an'anah (using "from"), and Ayyub bin Hani' has some weakness (lin); it is because of him that al-Dhahabi declared it defective in his "Talkhis".
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (981) recorded it by way of Ahmad bin Isa al-Misri, from Ibn Wahb, with this same isnad - and at its end he added the hadith that preceded with the author at number (1403).

Details of the narration: (That hadith is) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) visited his mother's grave and wept, and made those around him weep. Then he said: "I asked my Lord for permission to seek forgiveness for her, and I was not given permission. Then I asked Him for permission to visit her grave, and He gave me permission. So visit the graves, for they remind of death." It is in Muslim at number (976) by two routes from Yazid bin Kaysan.
